This book was short and concise. Extra gibberish was omitted - the remnants were a beautiful combination of text and explanations to often confusing topics. This book is perfect for any one studying respiration. This book is intended for med school students, but it is written in such a fashion that anyone could pick it up and read it. Reviewing? Cramming? Learning? This book will solve all your problems.

Useful pulmonary physiology introduction and reference

I used this book for my pulmonary block in medical school. If you like to preview topics before class, this book covers everything that will be discussed. It's also good for clarifying the more difficult concepts from lecture. The book goes into more detail than is strictly required for basic medical pulmonology (e.g. derivations of mathematical representations of concepts), however, the biggest ideas are well-summarized at the end of each chapter in the practice question section. Taking into account the relatively low cost, short length, and usefulness as a reference and practice question bank, I recommend this book for medical school pulmonary coursework.

Boeing Aircraft is currently working on its next big airplane, the Sonic Cruiser. But even before a prototype of the Sonic Cruiser takes to the skies, tens of thousands of hours will have been spent on design, planning, testing, legal, administrative, and other tasks.
The product development scenario for information technology and information security is radically different. Corporate networks are being rolled out with planning and design that is not on par with that of our counterparts in the aviation and construction industries. In fact, already complex corporate networks are continuously becoming more byzantine. Take an average MIS department and add up all their hardware vendors, network topologies and protocols, operating systems, software add-ons, and custom-written applications. Now try to securely integrate them. If security was not designed into the original system architecture, how can these security products be expected to work? Despite the fact that companies are spending more and more money on information systems security, the systems are growing more and more complex -- and complex systems are much harder to protect.
Security Architecture: Design, Deployment and Operations, is intended to help readers design and deploy better security technologies. The authors believe that security architecture must be comprehensive, because a network that is 98% secure is actually 100% insecure. This is especially true, given that -- contrary to popular belief -- information security is not a pure science, but a mixture of art and science.
Effective information security must encompass every aspect of the enterprise. Security Architecture shows how to design a secure infrastructure. It addresses all of the major security products and provides details on how to deploy them.
The authors incisively write that it is not enough for security professionals to understand the theory behind information security; unless they are able to insert security controls in the proper places within an application (data flows, storage and processing), the security solution will not be effective. A security product that is implemented incorrectly is like medicine that is taken improperly: great in potential, but futile in reality.
In addition, if the inserted security solution is not managed with the proper processes in place (e.g., change management, separation of duties, notification, and escalation), the level of security provided will degrade with time until the control becomes ineffective.
The book covers all of the fundamentals of information security. Particularly noteworthy is Chapter 3, "Information Classification and Access Control Plan." As companies place more of their corporate data jewels on often-untrusted public networks, the lack of an information classification scheme can have significant negative security consequences. Also, access control is critical in that many organizations -- and even the media -- are busy obsessing about remote hackers from foreign countries and have become oblivious to the real threats to information security: insiders. While it is much more romantic to think about foreigners hacking into your system in the middle of the night, the reality is that most breaches occur via insiders during normal business hours.
The authors of Security Architecture discuss the elements needed to design and deploy effective information security architecture. Critical security products such as PKI, firewalls, VPN, IDS, and others are discussed, but cryptographic accelerators are not mentioned.
This book highlights best practices and security standards and guidelines for effectively securing an enterprise. The book is well organized and easy to read. Many chapters have additional references and URL's for further research.
The inclusion of numerous case studies, combined with the authors' real-world experience, makes Security Architecture a valuable reference. No one would ever want to get on a plane that had not been properly designed and tested. Neither should we want to use networks that have not been adequately designed and tested from a security standpoint. Security Architecture is intended to make sure that doesn't happen.

James P. Hanigan is a native of New York City. He holds A.B. and M.A. degrees in History from Fordham University, an M.Div. from Woodstock College, and a Ph.D. in Religion from Duke University. He has taught at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Villa Maria College in Erie, Pennsylvania and is currently associate professor of moral theology at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh.

This book brings the Incan empire to life through breathtaking photographs. It offers large chunks in sidebars for context, and it gives historical and cultural information. The book is a very nice size, 8" X 9", so the large color photographs and illustrations really jump out.

Great book -- good information.

Does not explore the possibility of Incan culture proceeding from Asian colonists along the Pacific coast, but it does present the Wari people and the Chimu ruins. Interested children can follow up on those leads.

There is just nothing like a gifted author, and Anne Barbour is that!

Our rake, Lord Bythorne, just doesn't stand a chance. He's beset by a charming, but recalcitrant ward, Chloe, and has his encounter of a lifetime with Miss Hester Blayne, England's premier feminist. He doesn't know it yet, but he's done for.

This tale is just perfect - fluid, graceful writing; witty narrative; humorous dialogue; LOL situations, and a sweetly developed love story.

We come to know the protagonists so well, and they're likeable. Even the secondary characters are explored in satisfying depth. The story moves at a spanking pace - not a single 'draggy' page.

And.....it is "period perfect"!

I must be in a certain mood to read some novels, but not this one. It's great! Right up there with my favorites. I hope you enjoy it - I did, immensely.

An enjoyable romp with agreeable characters

This is the first book by Anne Barbour I have read, and it would certainly encourage me to seek out more of her books. This is a very entertaining story, with believable and likeable main characters, and also some supporting characters who are very well developed and could even deserve a story in their own right (Robert and Barbara in particular, though possibly also Chloe and John).
Hester and Thorne at first appear to be poles apart, but he is less shallow than she believes him to be and she is less of a harridan than he expects her to be. Even still, when they meet and get to know each other, the sparks fly in all directions! The sexual tension is palpable in some scenes, and Barbour handles the relationship development extremely well. She shows the unwilling but deep friendship which grows between them in parallel to their mutual attraction, and the way in which they come to trust each other, much to their surprise.
And when jealousy rears its ugly head... watch out!

Lovely traditional Regency with a lot of plot for a shorter story

This book is a great traditional Regency. Hester Blayne is a radical who is content to write her treatises in her country cottage. It's not until Charles Trent, Earl of Bythorne (known to his intimates as Thorne), shows up on her doorstep that she realizes that the new "maid" whom she has hired is actually Thorne's wayward ward, Chloe. Quite the rakehell, Thorne has no idea how to deal with his ward. Since Thorne sees that Chloe will have nothing to do with his highhandedness and, in fact, appears to listen to the blistery Miss Blayne, Thorne determines that he must somehow bring Miss Blayne with them to London so that she may provide a guiding hand to young Chloe. Through a series of events, the three return to London, where Hester and Thorne have to navigate the waters of London society...and their feelings for one another.

There are a lot of secondary characters in this book that add to the story, and the secondary romances in particular tie into the story well. Thorne has arranged a match for Chloe, but she resists. He's in love with her, though, and their courtship flows throughout the book. Also, Thorne has been casually courting Lady Barbara for years. In the course of the Season, Hester also finds herself with a suitor. (Thorne can't stand it, and what is this...jealousy??) Little do they know, however, that Hester's suitor is Lady Barbara's erstwhile suitor.

I really like this book - it's one of my "keeper" traditional Regencies that I like to pull out every once in a while to read through my favorite parts. Thorne is a fairly typical rakish hero who doesn't quite know how to handle the firebrand who is Hester Blayne. Hester is pretty wonderful. She's independent, has strong opinions, and she refuses to fall for "The Smile" whenever Thorne tries to pull it out and use it on her. The ending is really sweet and romantic, and it's also satisfying to see the secondary romances between Chloe and John and Robert and Barbara come to an amiable conclusion.

About the Author

Denis McQuail is emeritus professor of communication at the University of Amsterdam and visiting professor in the Department of Politics, University of Southampton. His books include Audience Analysis (1997) and McQuail's Mass Communication Theory (5th ed. 2005), a comprehensive introduction to the field that takes full account of new technologies and globalization issues. His most recent edited collection is Communication Theory and Research (2006), which presents outstanding studies in communications research published during the last decade. A fine introduction to mass communication theory

As a professor of communication, I use this book as a text in my introductory course. While it lacks a little bit in giving details of individual theories, its broad coverage of the field is excellent. This is a good book for someone who wants to know what "mass communication" is all about, but you will need to read additional books or articles to get a full understanding of particular theories.

A great book to understand Communication studies

An extense and complete review of over more than 60 years of Communication Studies is the result of an incredible job by Proffesor Denis McQuail, from the University of Amsterdam. Altough is not a chronological display of theories, is very easy to read. This third edition includes some of the more recent examples from the Cultural Studies, and that addition is thankful for everybody interested in the field this days. JUL.

Twist filled and action packed fun

Oh my heart is filled with joy after reading this book.

I picked up this series on a whim. I had no idea that I would love this book and the series while reading Map of Fates.

This book picks up just about where the last one left off with Avery and Jack searching for clues to unlock the bracelet. In doing this I got all the things I loved in the first book action, history, romance, slight comedy, and betrayal.

The story got way more complex and we get a closer look at the Saxon family and other families who are a part of The Circle. I loved this because I got more information about The Circle. I must give Maggie Hall mad props because there was the best twist ever and I had absolutely no clue. No clue people. It completely messed with my brain.

I didn't think it was possible but I fell even more in love with Stellan. How is that even possible? I just want Avery and stellan together because the undeniable attraction and lets face it lust is driving me crazy and I screamed kiss already. I found myself loving Jack less in this book because he was overbearing and overprotective of Avery. The poor girl needed room to breathe and make decisions on her own. I think he has good intentions but it was a turn off. I also liked that Colette and Elody(??), and even Luke had bigger parts in this book. No details, but I love them all for different reasons and they add to the story. They had each others back.

The only think I cannot get over is my disdain for Avery. I think that she is very childish, she definitely acts like a little kid. She also had nerve to judge others for their actions when her own drive to save her mom had its deadly costs as well. It was satisfying when she got called out on it. The one thing I had a challenging time with was the fact that Avery was too nice when she is immersed in a world that is cutthroat. I think in the next book she is going to toughen up and grow.

I urge you to continue the series and read this book. Its so good. Even better than the first book. You get all the great things in the first book and more. So many twists, action, and adventure.

Unfortunately I did not enjoy this story as much as I enjoyed The Conspiracy of Us. The focus was blurred and it was slightly difficult to track with the characters. The meaning and clarity behind the characters actions was not nearly as deep in this sequel. I did appreciate the surprises that popped up regarding the Circle but I was not happy with how the characters developed individually. Yes the camaraderie that formed was endearing but even that was flawed in an awkward and unnecessary fashion. In the end morality is always the most binding factor of a story as it focuses on the depths within an individual. This was a weak sequel to a great story and I believe that reason lies within the fact that romance was overplayed while the morality of the story was thrown out the window.
