It's nice but...

While this is a definite improvement over the prior edition of Choe's with more updated information and use of the Guidelines as I hope will be on the exam, there are multiple typos and the information can contradict itself in the case format. I think it serves as a useful adjunct, but probably not the only thing I would want to use to study for the test. Some of the algorithms, like those in the infertility workup, are helpful. Chapters with wrong titles "Urethral obstruction" instead of "Ureteral obstruction" are not.

Crappy book but the only one out there

I bought this edition as soon as it was released in Jan for the oral boards this year (2017). It is helpful in the sense that it lays out the format for review for the oral exam. But there are sooooo many typos and mistakes especially for a 4th edition like other reviewers have mentioned. The infertility chapter is absolute trash and i actually ripped out those pages. How is a book in its 4th edition have typos in the chapter outline (urethral obstruction).
This is a lazy update and the authors dont care bc its the only oral board book out there. A total cash grab bc they know there will be anxious and nervous applicants willing to pick up this book. I really hope another group comes out with a competitor and puts this book out of its misery.

A Phenomenal Job of Providing very Fascinating Information about American English

I love word books of many types, and this book not only contains word frequency data on the 5000 most used words in American English, but also provides additional words that most often accompany the 5000 words when they appear in speech and print. For example, the 1974th most commonly used word is "apart," and the associated words that are most often used with apart, are: fall, tear, foot, far, set, break, inch, pull, rip, year, keep, about, mile, and shoulder-width.

The book also contains a full index of the words and their frequency ranking, so they can easily be found without going through the front of the book. The entries for each word also contain the part of speech for each word, as well as variants of the words, such as goes, going, went, and gone which belong to the "head word" or "lemma" go. The word's statistical dispersion (the degree to which the word is found across 100 corpora) is also included. Interestingly, the corpus the book was based on contains over 400 MILLION words, so this was no small task.

Another feature of the book is the presence of 31 different thematic vocabulary lists ranging from colors and professions to emotions and word length. Overall, this is one outstanding book for any logophile, linguist, researcher, and English professor. It contains outstanding information and is an excellent reference book for anyone who loves the English language.

This is a must have for anyone teaching ESL/EFL. Why waste your time teaching vocabulary words that the students will never use? With this book, you get the 5000 most common vocabulary words based on a 385 million plus corpus. If it's not in this book, odds are your students won't need to know it in everyday conversation.

Each word has a list of words around it so you know the context in which the word is used. There are many sub lists of things such as animals, professions, weather, etc based on the main book.

Very helpful for creating vocabulary lists and simplifying your writing for a lower level audience. Anyone teaching, learning, or writing for the ESL/EFL populace should have a copy of this book.

5,000 Words and Their Known Associates

This book contains standardized information about the 5,000 most frequently-used words in American English. The words are listed in descending rank order of frequency. In addition to the frequency information, the entry for each word contains a list of the top 20 or so words which most often appear near it. The frequency and collocation information was obtained from a 385 million word corpus, assembled from 150,000 documents. In addition to its primary list, the book also contains 31 smaller lists with the most frequent words used for specific topics. Two indices allow word lookup in the main list alphabetically or by part of speech.

As the authors intend, this material has a number of uses in language learning and translation. It is also a great resource for text analysts and computational linguists (see Weiss, Indurkhya and Zhang's Fundamentals of Predictive Text Mining). Its contents can be used to create expected frequency word lists that can detect patterns of emphasis in text documents. The collocation information can also be used to resolve ambiguity between different word senses in natural language processing. This source is conveniently organized for those who want to explore the connections between frequent words and the words around them. Those contemplating large projects might be best served by the disc-based version.

Michael David is the author of WordPress Search Engine Optimization (now in 2nd Edition on Packt Publishing) and is a veteran of the search engine optimization industry. He founded the Austin-based WordPress development and search engine optimization firm, TastyPlacement (Tastyplacement.com), which still thrives today. He originally trained as a lawyer and pursued Internet marketing as a second career. He lives in Austin, Texas.

Useful and insightful guide

Michael David explains in a very detailed, thorough and balanced way in his manual Wordpress Search Engine Optimization (2nd ed.) how SEO for WordPress sites works. David explains that; "It's important to keep in mind the role of the search engine. Too often, webmasters think or say Google is against them because Google appears to rank lower-value sites in favor of their own. The truth is the exact opposite: Google wants you to rank – as long as your result serves the need of its user base. You need to give Google what it’s looking for (or Yahoo or Bing, as the case may be), and Google will rank your site higher." (p.3) I was somewhat unnerved by David's to-the-point disambiguation and clarifications of the world of Google and SEO. But don't shoot the messenger: He is merely stating outright what many people don't know and will never find out, unless they read this. He gives the reader the advantage of his insider knowledge. Never again will you be fooled by spam, or hoax emails or all the other nonsense that pitches up on your site or in your in-box. I realized how much more there is for me to do, how things hang together, and which mistakes I must avoid. It was a real eye-opener. Particularly useful chapters are:

Chapter 5: Creating Optimized and Engaging Contents
Chapter 6: Avoiding SEO Mistakes
Chapter 7: Testing Your Site and Monitoring Your Progress
I would recommend you buy the ebook or pdf version of this manual because of all the hyperlinks in it (specifically in the Appendices that list the plugins and resources). Apart from being comprehensive and balanced, David also has a good writing style that makes the argumentation flow and draws the reader into the explanations, which are often complex. If you have a WordPress site, I would say this is one of the best manuals and technical handbooks to refer to and keep on hand.
