The Blighted Eye, by Glenn Bray

The Blighted Eye showcases Glenn Bray’s extensive collection of original comic art by cartoonists such as R. Crumb, Matt Groening, Charles Addams, Charles Schulz, Dan Clowes, Chris Ware and many more.

The Blighted Eye is the most copious, the most diverse, and the most lavish compilation of original comic art ever published ― all from the mind-boggling collection of Glenn Bray. Bray was an enthusiast of marginal or outsider American pop culture when he started to collect original comic art in 1965 ― a time when very few people, including the artists themselves, truly valued the original art. Bray has, over the last nearly 50 years, amassed the most eclectic collection of original comic art in private hands. The book features work by a pantheon of cartooning masters, including Charles Addams, Carl Barks, Charles Burns, Al Capp, Dan Clowes, Jack Cole, R. Crumb, Jack Davis, Kim Deitch, Will Elder, Al Feldstein, Virgil Finlay, Drew Friedman, Chester Gould, Justin Green, Rick Griffin, Bill Griffith, Matt Groening, George Grosz, V.T. Hamlin, Jaime Hernandez, George Herriman, Al Hirshfeld, Graham Ingels, Bernard Krigstein, Harvey Kurtzman, Gary Panter, Virgil Partch, Savage Pencil, Peter Pontiac, Charles Rodrigues, Spain Rodriguez, Charles Schulz, Gilbert Shelton, Joost Swarte, Stanislav Szukalski, Irving Tripp, Chris Ware, S. Clay Wilson, Basil Wolverton, Wallace Wood, Jim Woodring, Art Young, and ― it should go without saying ― many more. Public exhibitions of original comics art has proliferated over the last decade with such shows as Masters of American Comics at LA’s Hammer Museum and R. Crumb’s Underground at Seattle’s Frye Museum. Readers have been able to see this original art in museum catalogues and the occasional compilation of work digitally scanned directly from the original art. Although drawn for print, the hand-crafted original art ― brush strokes and pen lines inked on paper ― offers a beauty and an unique insight into the form, a different way of perceiving the artist’s work. Review
“This book focuses on Glenn Bray’s trove of comic art, but his idiosyncratic collector’s eye takes in all kinds of cultural detritus: girlie pinups and rock posters, pro wrestling and movie monsters. Mr. Bray started collecting comics originals in 1965, and Blighted is a gallery-like Who’s Who of underground, aboveground and no-ground cartoonists: Harvey Kurtzman and R. Crumb, Virgil Finlay and Gary Panter, George Herriman and Chris Ware. It also shows how an eccentric yet passionate eye can change the way we think about art.” (Dana Jennings - The New York Times)

“The Blighted Eye is a massive book ...[that] represents the tip of a comic art iceberg. ... I hope a second volume is in the works.” (Mark Frauenfelder - Wink Books)

About the Author
Glenn Bray lives in California’s San Fernando Valley with his wife, the Dutch cartoonist Lena Zwalve.

LIKE BEING IN THE ULTIMATE COMIC ART MUSEUM
By Silver Age Space Cadet
The last couple of years have seen a number of definitive books on 20th century comic book and strip art greats such as Daniel Clowes, Jaime Hernandez, Jack Davis. The practice of having the art newly photographed directly from the originals is thankfully becoming more common, as it puts the reader much closer to the experience of viewing the actual art (a rare opportunity, needless to say). But whereas the afore-mentioned books convey the experience of being at a gallery showing of one artist, this book celebrating the collection of Glenn Bray has the distinction of making you feel like you're strolling through the Louvre of Underground, Outsider and Counter Culture comic art! There are generous helpings of great examples by the likes of alternative press giants like Crumb, Panter, Wolverton, Clowes, Rory Hayes, Robert Williams, Drew Friedman, alongside greats from strips, EC comics, and funny animal art like Harvey Kurtzman and Carl Barks -- ALL UNDER ONE ROOF! (not to mention dozens of artists I was otherwise unfamiliar with, who now deserve further investigation; even Freddie Blassie gets page space devoted to him!). It may seem like it shouldn't work, but it does: the book is over 400 pages so manages to give everyone their due. It's smartly organized, and the reproduction of the art is top notch as mentioned. If you're interested in alternative press or underground art or comic book art in general, I think you'll find the book to be an achievement as I have. Hats off to Fantagraphics Books for putting this together (and doing it right!), and their continued dedication to preserving this great art form in their various archival editions.

This book answers the question "Where's the Beef?" because its all Killer and no Filler.
By Charles R. Nauert
I love this book! "The Blighted Eye" showcases Glenn Bray's extensive collection of original comic art by my friends, cartoonists Rick Griffin, Robert Crumb, Spain Rodriguez, Gilbert Shelton, S. Clay Wilson, Robert Williams and many more. Glenn includes photos of his visits to Rick's home and their trip to Peru and Easter Island with Robert Williams… and ton's more.
Its about a 20 pound book (just a guess here) that lists for $100 but amazon delivers it to your door for $63.64 or about $3.00 a pound… just think of it as answering the question "Where's the Beef?" because its all Killer and no Filler.

If a 10 is the highest possible rating, this is a 100--all the way.

If a 10 is the highest possible rating, this is a 100--all the way. It's not just a book, it's an event... a happening.
If books were celebrity actors, The Blighted Eye is the equivalent of a Bogart, a Pacino, a DeNiro. It's one of those rare books
that I keep returning to again, and again, and again.
