With the whole Christian world looking on, we Catholics have entered a sometimes acrimonious debate with ourselves as to what should be expected of those who are in the special ministry of the Church, i.e, the priesthood-What manner of life should our priests live and what work should they do? Also under review is the role of the bishop, said traditionally to possess the fullness of the priesthood. We are asking whether the authority structure on all levels should be more collegial or democratic and what such a change would mean in light of the traditional theology of the episcopate. Ecumenically we are pondering our relationships to other churches in which there is no episcopate in apostolic succession -from the Preface

Excellent Scholarship with a Catholic Focus
By Larry R. Davis
Raymond Brown is a legend among theologians, popular among Protestants, Catholics, Biblical conservatives and modernists. His scholarship is impeccable as is his approach to the Scriptures and the language. In this book, he studies the process of the development of the pre-Catholic priesthood and the ecclesiastical hierarchy, starting with the apostles and bishops as recorded in the New Testament. Though his scholarship focuses on the Catholic system as it developed, and the book serves as somewhat of an apologetic for that, his scholarship honestly examines the history and linguistics in such a way that it is helpful even to a Protestant interested in the authority structure as presented in the Bible.

Development of episcopacy in the early church
By Dr. Marianne Dorman
AS usual Raymond Brown has approached this with scholarly insight as how the New Testament writings reveal the emergence of what the church called the episcopal ministry. It challenges the old belief that the apostles ordained, and makes readers analsye Scripture from a fresh perspective. It is a book worth reading

"Material for Thought"
By Mike DePue, OFS
The Catechism of the Catholic Church: "The Second Vatican Council 'teaches... that the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders is conferred by episcopal consecration, that fullness namely which, both in the liturgical tradition of the Church and the language of the Fathers of the Church, is called the high priesthood, the acme (summa) of the sacred ministry.'" (1556)
How has the episcopal role become what it is? As the Preface states, this seminal and widely-cited book offers "material for thought" rather than a "complete, scientific treatment of the biblical background." (p. 1) (All page citations are from the 1970 Paulist Press ed.)
Sections of the book: 1) Biblical Background of the Catholic Priesthood (pp. 5-45); 2) Are the Bishops the Successors of the Apostles? (pp. 47-86)
As Fr. Brown sees it, there were "four principal roles or ministries in the NT [New Testament] that ultimately funneled into the Christian priesthood" (p. 21)--disciple, apostle, presbyter-bishop, and the one who presided at the Eucharist.
As the book ends, Fr. Brown (1928-1998) delivers this cautionary note: "Inevitably [the episcopacy] will tend to become too rigid and too confining... The impression will be given that the Holy Spirit works only through the hierarchy, from the top down and never from the bottom up." (p.85) True today?
As the Church finds and creates itself, from the first century to the twenty-first century, it is well to look back, with Fr. Brown's erudite help, to the origins of the episcopal role. The world presently looks to Pope Francis, the Bishop of Rome, for direction looking forward.
