I am surprised nobody has reviewed John Carpenter's TALES FOR A HALLOWEENIGHT Vol. 1 already, The excellent, moody Tim Bradstreet cover sets the tone for a collection of art that generally meets my expectations. This is a diverse collection of talents and stories. The collection includes stories by Carpenter himself, publisher Sandy King and David J. Schow and others. I think the tales by Carpenter and Schow are my favorites. Carpenter returns to mix quantum physics with horror, territory he ventured into with his film LORD OF DARKNESS. While I liked some stories more than others, I can't say there is a loser in the bunch.
Likewise, the fully painted art is an appealing range of styles and techniques. My favorite art was rendered by Federico De Luca,Darick Robertson and Leonardo Manco, on the same stories mentioned above.
The one element that I think needs improvement are the horror host intro pages featuring.The Groundscreeper. While Jon Bogdanove does a good job rendering the character, I'm not a big fan of cartoony art in straight horror titles. Worse is the fact that the exact same art is used to introduce every story, which just looks cheap. I also felt the intros, which are half page text pieces, fail to set the proper mood. Not because the writing isn't good--it IS good--the heavy text doesn't flow well into the comics storytelling. I can appreciate that the publishers were trying to do something a little more ambitiious with their horror host, but it would serve the stories better to actually illustrate the intro scene being described.
All in all, an impressive first venture. I hope the book sold well enough for each to be treated with a new tome each year. I recommend it!

Can't wait for volume 2

Can't recommend this book enough. An eclectic mix of fun, scary, and downright messed up horror stories. If you're a fan of horror anthologies, horror comics/movies, or just a fan of John carpenter, you need this book on your shelf.
