Both repetitive and badly ended

If you've always felt Hamlet was a bit too blithe and devil-may-care for your taste, you might like Jerzy.

A considerable part of this book depicts Jerzy having the exact same self-pity parties about his being a slave, and going over the exact same ground every damn time he intentionally breaks one of the Commandments- even though he's done it many times before. Same reasoning each time. Same "Oh, Woe!!!" each time. Over and over again. I bet if these parts alone were cut out- maybe including 1 instance each- the book would a third shorter and a lot easier to read. It felt like filler.

Also filler was going over the exact same ground over and over again about the different kinds of magical wines, the rules about working with them, etc. I could see reminding us of these once per volume- but every 50 pages or so? At length?

The ending was all kinds of unsatisfactory. The plot arcs of the secondary characters- all more interesting and charismatic than Jerzy- were abandoned. Even Jerzy's arc- after saving the world or whatever- isn't clear. And Jerzy's resolution- I don't think it's a spoiler to say that it's all very, very mystical and combines all 3 types of filler I mentioned above.

This might be a SPOILER: said mystical ending apparently only happened because Jerzy mass-murdered all his slaves. This after he decides that a slave's job is to LIVE!!!! at least if that slave is him, apparently; for not-him slaves, well, everyone knows it's OK for them to get sacrificed. How delightful.

I've given it 2 stars because it is grammatically written and had no or few spelling errors- things I appreciate in fiction after reading too many novels that fail in these ways.

I don't recommend this, although if you've already read #1 and/or 2, you'll probably want whatever sense of completion you can get from this.

Weak ending with minimal side story arc conclusions

Disclaimer: I make wine; I really wanted to see something cool and interesting come out of the magic system and world in this trilogy. The author is on to something fantastic but she executed the trilogy poorly.

Overall (3 stars):
The third book in the trilogy, The Shattered Vine, bring the main story arc to a close (at least you have to assume it is closed). The evil Vineart from the Exiles and Jerzy go toe-to-toe to supremacy of the Lands Vin. The ending is a weak ending which leaves open items and resolves none of the bigger issues opened during the various books.

The action is centered at Jerzy's winery. The magic happens in the winery (which actually makes some sense). The side characters scatter to play their parts in the overall plan (not that they really know what the plan is... ).

Characters (2 stars):
The characters do not develop much at all in the last book. Jerzy just comes to grips with what he has known for a long time. The other characters just play out thier 2 dimension roles. It does make sense for the third book to focus on Jerzy's learning and experimenting with magic. Jerzy's views and development are expressed via internal monologue not conversation with the other characters -- he is very augsty, whiny and riddled with self-doubt. It gets tiresome very quickly.

Mileu/World Setting (3 stars):
The world setting is novel, interesting and has great potential. The use of grape vines species to concentrate the magic of the world (Gia references everywhere) is a novel magic system. However, the premise that there are only 6 types of vines is silly and weakens the concept from the start. The subtle ways of combining various grape varieties gives me an amazing set of ideas on who the magic systems could and should have been done.

I am not sure if the author is going to write more for this world or not. If she does, she really needs to speak with a winemaker about blending wines to show the power and creativity can be worked into this world.

The Mage-prince debate or "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" aka Machievelli
is brought up over and over in a vague way. The debates never really talk about the past horrors or the past good things that some mage-princes might have done.

Writing (2 stars):
The target level for the writing is probably a young adult age range. I wish the author had shot a bit higher. It would have helped the overall tone and structure of the world setting.

Story/plot (2.5 to 2.75 stars):
The plot was fairly predictable. Do not expect any great plot twists; the plot moves along at the same speed and level as the previous two books. The ending of the book was weak and not expanded upon. It will most likely leave the reader wondering...not something I am looking for in a fantasy novel.

Terrible last book! I would have like to say "So Sad to See It End" But it doesn't really have an ending?

Last book in a trilogy which should have been only one short story. Too many characters that go nowhere in this last book! Why go to all the trouble the author did in the first, second, and first two thirds of this last book to show who all the main characters are, and what they might be able to do, then nothing! Even the Vineart's future is left for the reader to guess!

This have been one of my major complaints about authors, finish the books or do not bother to start writing the books in the first time. The books turn out to be a waist of time and money to the readers who support these writers.

    The book was easy to read and well organized. The formula that I needed (on the forces produced by current flow through bus bars) were easy to find and use. The general discussion of switchgear requirements was helpful to me for my application. Overall I would give the book a "good" raiting.

    "I never considered myself to be a musician when I was growing up. In fact, I was thoroughly convinced I did not have what it takes to be able to play music.

    I took cello lessons and failed miserable. I took piano lessons without making much progress. I sort of learned to play the recorder in school, if you can call playing hot cross buns playing.

    What I’m getting at is that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t keep time, I couldn’t play an instrument, the list of things I couldn’t do with respect to music is long.

    I found this particularly frustrating because my father is an absolutely fantastic professional saxophone player. I figured somewhere in me there had to be an inherent talent for music.

    I was very wrong.

    What I realized as I grew older was that my father didn’t have an inherent musical talent either. What he did have was an unstoppable drive to succeed.

    It took me a few years to get over my false idea that I could never be a good musician.

    A few years earlier my father had bought me a guitar as a Christmas present. It was sitting in a dusty case in my room, neglected.

    I had recently met a man named Jacob, another amazing musician. Jacob’s talent was with string instruments, particularly the bass. I asked his advice about what I should learn first.

    He told me to learn music theory, so I went online and began to read. I read a lot and started to teach myself scales. I was still really terrible at the guitar, but I kept at it, and slowly I improved.

    I stress the word slowly.

    A couple weeks into this process I asked Jacob to teach me guitar, and he said he would. I quickly found out that Jacob–despite being a wonderful player–is a horrible teacher.

    Jacob cannot think like a beginner, he cannot break down the knowledge and present it in bite sized pieces that are easy to swallow and digest.

    I wrote this book with that in mind.

    During the process of teaching myself the guitar, I learned a lot about how to teach guitar. I applied what I learned to write my best-selling guitar series: Scott's Simple Guitar Lessons.

    I’m still learning today. Music is extremely complicated and eclectic. I know for a fact that I will never master music, but that was never my goal.

    My goal was to be able to play with other people and enjoy doing it.

    I've achieved that goal, and it was worth the work.

    Now I want to help you achieve your musical goals, no matter what they are.

    I want to use what I learned the slow, hard way to make your learning process fast and easy.

    Chords Made Simple gets straight to the point

    I have a reasonable grasp of chords: this simple book put what I already knew into a context. Simple, but straight to the point. I now understand much more about chords that I did beforehand. It has, tantalisingly, pushed the door open a little. I particularly liked the section on voicing.

    Conversational Prayer

    This has to be one of the best books ever written on prayer. Don't let the fact that it was written in the late '50s scare you. Rosalind Rinker wrote this book out of her own personal frustration with prayer groups and so-called prayer meetings. Our 21st century prayer groups can be just as unfulfilling as those she experienced half a century ago. If you really want to understand what she means when she says, "Prayer is a dialogue between two people who love each other", try what she suggests. Find one or two others to join you and follow her guidance. You'll find that prayer isn't dry and boring, rather it's a refreshing retreat that bring great blessings. If you're looking for a book that's not just philosophy and hype--you won't be disappointed in this one.

    I've read this book two times and it is one of the best books I have ever read on prayer. Conversational prayer will give you a new meaning to prayer, it allows you to communicate to God on a personal level. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who wants to know God through prayer.

    Nice little book

    This thin volume was written in the mid 20th century for use by missionaries. That aside, it is a nice little book that contains practical language and gives a clear, if concise, explanation of basic grammar. There is a free wikibook on Wikipedia.com that can be used together with this book to get a more complete picture of the language.

    Keith Richards is a musician, singer, songwriter, and founding member of the rock band the Rolling Stones. Mr. Richards has five children and five grandchildren.
    Theodora Dupree Richards, named after her great-grandfather Theodore Augustus Dupree, is an artist and a daughter of Keith Richards and Patti Hansen.     Grandpas rock! Great book, beautiful story.

    Who'd have thought the wildman, who gave us When the Whip Comes Down and Let’s Spend the Night Together, could also tell such a gentle, evocative tale? Keith Richards writes about his grandfather Gus — a bandleader whose house was filled with “instruments and cake” — and the meandering walks they’d take together through the streets of London.

    Stones fans will love Gus & Me because it reveals how young Keef developed his love for music. But even if the book wasn’t about Richards (and even if the playful/mischievous illustrations hadn’t been drawn by his daughter and even if the accompanying CD didn’t feature Keith reading the story in the perfect bedtime voice), it’s simply a wonderful book for children, a book about the lasting gift that a grandfather gave to his grandson.

    A love song....

    A wonderful, touching tale of the love between a Grandfather and Grandson that led to a shared passion for music. I had read the story in Keith's autobiography Life, but the addition of his daughter Theodora's (who is named for Theodore Augustus Dupree, the titular Gus) illustrations adds to the family bond evoked by the story. Ordered a copy for my Grandniece and one for myself; my only regret is I don't get a copy of the CD with Keith reading the story since I got the Kindle edition...maybe Quinn and I can share! If you are a fan of music of any kind and wish to pass that love along, buy this book. If you have grandchildren or grandparents whom you love (or loved) and wish to pass that love along, buy this book. And if you love Keef, definitely BUY THIS BOOK!

    A must for any type of student going into to a clinical career!

    Great book! I'm a 4th year medical student, and this book provide a systematic framework for taking a GREAT history. I feel like my school didnt teach interviewing very well, and I developed my own technique by struggling through 3rd year without much guidance (some of which turned out to be similar to what this book suggests). Still, this book continues to offer more information and tips on continuing to improve my history gathering skills!

    Great intro to fundamental interviewing skills

    This updated textbook contains much of the latest evidence in its review of the medical literature on patient-centered medical interviewing, and presents it in an astonishingly clear, concise approach that students in the beginning of their medical training will find invaluable. Practicing physicians will also find the summaries refreshing and helpful. Highly recommend.

    The definitive guide to patient-centered interviewing

    This 3rd edition of Smith's Patient-Centered Interviewing provides health professions students and practitioners with an in-depth, comprehensive, and elegant treatise on how to perform an effective medical interview by integrating non- directive with directive approaches to communication. The authors present the interview in steps that can be learned and practiced and include a number of helpful pedagogical tools such as a pocket card, clinical vignettes, lists of essential questions, graphics, and exercises for deliberate practice. Throughout, the authors paint a portrait of the patient-centered interview with examples of the words that clinicians and patients might say in real encounters. There are also chapters addressing special challenges, advanced skills, oral presentation, and documentation. At my medical school, I recommend this book to medical students as an essential text and also incorporate it into the training of standardized patients.
