Her work brings to light the little known and often marginalized lives of female Hindu ascetics (sadhus) in the North Indian state of Rajasthan. Examining the everyday religious worlds and practices of the mostly unlettered female sadhus, who come from a number of castes, Real Sadhus Sing to God illustrates that these women experience asceticism in relational and celebratory ways. They construct their lives as paths of singing to God, which, the author suggests, serves as the female way of being an ascetic. Examining the relationship between asceticism (sannyas) and devotion (bhakti) in contemporary contexts, the book brings together two disparate fields of study-yoga/asceticism and bhakti-using the singing of bhajans (devotional songs) as an orienting metaphor.

This is the first book-length study to explore the ways in which female sadhus perform and thus create gendered views of asceticism through their singing, storytelling, and sacred text practices, which DeNapoli characterizes as their "rhetoric of renunciation."

All that jazz

Lawrence Durrell regarded "Death of a Hero" as the best war-novel of the epoch. Its author, Richard Aldington was at the time a reknowed translator of Balzac, Boccaccio, and Apuelius; a close friend of Eliot, Pound and Mead; and the husband to imagist poet H.D. He has unfortunately not been given his due in present times, but if you enjoy Wyndham Lewis and Evelyn Waugh Aldington will be a thoroughly stisfying experience. The novel here reviewed was published in 1929 and described by critics as a memorial to a generation presented in a rhythmic prose that many have glamorized as jazzy, although, in all sincerity it has none of the jive, but enough stilted trills to warrent the title. Spurred by Voltarian irony and DH Lawrence-like candor the story follows the hero, George Winterbourne, as he resolves to leave the Edwardian gloom of his embattled parents behind him and escape to Soho, which on the eve of the war buzzes with talk of politics, pacifism and free love. He paints, he marries, he takes a mistress: the perfect hero of his time...whose destiny is the bloody nightmare of the trenches... - Brideshead Rivisted has overlapping themes, but the two styles could not be more different.
Aldington's fugue is a chronicle of this doomed favorite of the gods: a searing testament to the corrosive waste of human warfare, the agenda of politics and the hopes of the hopeless. This is as stark and unadulterated an attack on British hypocrisy and affectation as you'll ever find - ferocious, unsparing and passionate. But the satire of the author is more blunt than Waugh's for example and more philsophical rather than social, thus making this a kind of elitist read at present, but one that is rewarding nonetheless.

About the Author
Robert McAtee, BA, LMT, CSCS, has been a sport massage therapist since 1981, specializing in sport and orthopedic massage therapy. He has worked in both clinical settings and private practice and currently maintains a private sport massage practice in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

McAtee teaches facilitated stretching and sport massage seminars throughout the U.S. and internationally to massage therapists, athletic trainers, personal trainers, chiropractors, 0lympic-caliber athletes and coaches, and amateur athletes.

McAtee received his massage training at the Institute for Psycho-Structural Balancing in Los Angeles and San Diego (1981) and through the Sports Massage Training Institute (SMTI) in Costa Mesa, California (1986). He is a member of the National Sports Massage Team of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and is Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Jeff Charland, PT, ATC, CSCS, GDMT, is a 1983 graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison Physical Therapy Program, where he also competed as a varsity athlete on a wrestling scholarship. Since 1987, Charland has lectured in the areas of sports medicine, rehabilitation, and assessment/treatment of neural tissue disorders. He is team trainer and travels internationally with the U.S. Judo and U.S. Wrestling Federations’ National and Olympic teams.

Charland completed the graduate program in Manipulative Therapy at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia, under the direction of Bob Elvey, a world-renowned physiotherapist. He is a certified athletic trainer through the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA. In 1997, he earned a certification in Active Release Techniques. He also has served as director of a sports physical therapy clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

An Exerciser's Gold Mine

As a runner and horseback rider, I have always subscribed to the theory that stretching is critical for performance. However, finding an effective stretching system has been a long and arduous search. Some books are difficult for the lay person to understand. Some books do not have a fundamental theory underpinning their exercises. And some books promote stretches that are actually harmful. I have found Facilitated Stretching to be the best of the bunch. The illustrations are clear, well-organized and large enough to follow. The text is written clearly and concisely: I can figure out what to do the first time I read it. The cd is excellent: slow, well-narrated and easy to follow. Best of all, the results are immediate. My partially frozen shoulders are starting to move in response to a combination of massage therapy and facilitated stretching (as advocated in the book). My hamstrings have finally let go so now I know what it feels like to walk as normal people do! In short, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It has met all my stringent requirements. This new edition is even better than the second edition which I studied before buying this book.

Includes a DVD for us visual people !

Well, between a 'like' and a 'love' - it was recommended by my massage instructor ERIC RUBEN, DC (who is also the most superb chiropractor in San Francisco). It includes a DVD which is why I chose this particular book. It is okay. There are a lot of 'self-exercises/stretching' which could be very beneficial to some. I am focusing on what I can do, as a practitioner, stretching a client. It does give a good academic foundation of body's 'how and what' is stretching. I am using it and would likely recommend it 80-85%, esp if you have other books on your massage library shelf that compliment this one. To be fair, I haven't gone through the entire book.

I ordered this book with DVD to add to my ability to give a better massage; I have never believed that just one or two modalities are enough to make a person feel comfortable in their "skin." The neck stretches are going to be so wonderful to do with and for my husband and his mother. I can see this technique benefiting my co-workers in Day Surgery. I will need to become more proficient in the lumbar and even knee work since there are times we stand for over an hour waiting for a patient to emerge from anesthesia and all the standing takes a toll. Robert McAtee makes it look possible to help others comfort level without needing oil or disrobing. Worth the money to this R.N./L.M.T.

In 1972 The Limits of Growth , sponsored by the Club of Rome and produced by a research team on a MIT computer programmed with a World3 model, created a stormy sensation. Denounced as eco-gloom and doom, the book also became a keystone of the era's environmentalism. Now on the eve of the June U.N. Earth Summit, three of the researchers give World3 another run. Although many books and reports examine "sustainability," the authors provide unique insights thanks to their background in systems analysis. Society has gone into overshoot, they argue, a state of being beyond limits without knowing it. These limits are more like speed limits than barriers at the end of the road: the rate at which renewable resources can renew themselves, the rate at which we can change from nonrenewable resources to renewable ones, and the rate at which nature can recycle our pollution. Without being a catch-all on the environmental crisis, the book shows how we are overshooting such crucial resources as food and water while overwhelming nature with pollutants like those causing global warming. World3 runs 13 future scenarios and learns that we can only avoid collapse by unplugging the exponential growth in population (two billions people in the past 20 years) and industrial production (doubled in the past 20 years). If the world settles for two children per couple and the per capita income of South Korea, we can avoid collapse and find an equilibrium at 7.7 billion people through 2100. Systems analysis may sound like an academic specialty, but the authors have written for the general reader and provide a compelling challenge to traditional economics and public complacency.

A sequel to the Club of Rome's Limits to Growth (1972. o.p.), Beyond the Limits uses a sophisticated computer modeling program to project into the next century the consequences of current rates of resource consumption and population growth. A number of modified scenarios are then illustrated, showing the impact on the global environment of alternative patterns of allocation and consumption. While its graphs and tables may intimidate some, Beyond the Limits is clearly written, nonpolemical, and rewards the patient reader. Particularly interesting is the discussion of the crisis with the ozone layer as exemplary of the ability of the world's governments to respond to environmental crises. However, it is the fundamental principles underlying this book that set it apart. Beyond the Limits recognizes that the future doesn't lie in tinkering with resource use or simply squelching population growth in developing countries. A sustainable future will require profound social and psychological readjustments in the developed and developing world. Highly recommended.

An impressive sequel to the controversial and influential Limits to Growth (1972) prepared by three of the authors of that environmental clarion call and based on worldwide data compiled during the past 20 years. Donella H. Meadows (Environmental Studies/Dartmouth), Dennis L. Meadows (Management Studies/Univ. of New Hampshire), and Randers (Policy Analysis/Norwegian School of Management) use a vast array of statistics, projections, and charts to assert that global limits have already been exceeded in certain growth areas. Current crop yields can only sustain the world's population at subsistence levels, they point out, while nonrenewable energy resources and fresh water supplies are dwindling, and greenhouse gases and other pollutants increase. But while the prognosis is disaster within decades if nothing is done, there are encouraging signs. Technology offers greater efficiency in energy consumption and pollution control, international response to the ozone crisis has been relatively swift, and recycling efforts are gaining headway. The authors warn, however, that the conditions underlying limit ``overshoots''--population growth and resource depletion in a finite world, for example--remain unaddressed in the corridors of power. Modifying the computer-modeling system employed in their first work, the authors graphically depict plausible futures ranging from utter collapse to manageable growth, each depending on the controls used, and they urgently propose a series of general measures that would commence the long-overdue transition to a sustainable global society. An Important and Very Readable Book

This book is a must read for anyone seriously interested in global sustainability. It is clearly written and is easily accessible to non-technical readers. Although based on a sophisticated computer model, the authors avoid presenting a dry, scientific explanation of the simulation -- equations and mathematical formulations are deemphasized. Instead, the authors refer the technically-minded to an earlier book (Dynamics of Growth in a Finite World, available at [...]) that contains every equation used in the model. Moreover, Prof. Meadows makes the model itself available to anyone interested (for a nominal fee).

A brilliant, accessible analysis of our ecological plight

This book contains more common sense, wisdom and compassion than any I've read in many years. It challenges the prevailing paradigm of our society with a perfect balance of head and heart. I borrowed a copy from a friend and I've now come to Amazon to buy my own copy, which I will urge all my friends to read. Another reviewer from Virginia seems to think the book should have been more technical. I think s/he is completely missing the point. This is a book for lay people, which it should be, because if it was full of equations only a handful of geeks would read it and it wouldn't change anything. As it is it's written in beautifully clear prose and you don't need any technical training to follow it.

very handy and interesting topic and clarification of key concepts. the book is good for educational use and to get an overview of technocultural concepts. It is a good read as starting point. easy to read.

Love this book, but my limited intellect can only handle about 5 pages at a time : )

Succinct. Kinda textbook-y, which in fact, I'm pretty sure it is. Pop references in the books will no doubt get stale with time, but the concepts are right on and an enjoyable read.
