I work at Rodale and was lucky enough to be a test panelist for the program outlined in this book. Let me tell you...it works! Peter just has a unique gift of getting through to people, helping them get over whatever emotional ties they have to "stuff."

"I might need this one day" is no longer an excuse I use to keep unnecessary items, and I'm finding happiness in other places, not buying "stuff."

This book lays out a plan to create a vision for each room in your house and then systematically helps you declutter each room. It actually made decluttering and letting go of things, dare I saw it, fun.

For years, I knew I had to get more organized and get rid of things, but no one has ever gotten through to me like Peter has. I lost almost 12 pounds on the book, and my house is looking better and better every day. Thank you, Peter!

Could Not Wait to Read It and Got It the Day It Came Out

The three main points of the book are lose the clutter, lose the weight and use mindfulness to avoid malignant emotions, food and items in your life. Organizational guru Peter Walsh helped me think through changes I have been making and continue to make. "Somehow, at some point, you become too large for your comfort," he writes at the beginning. He also helps explain how stuff, emotions and eating are all related and not helping me get the life I want and deserve. I want a conversation with him on diet programs, although he gives a simple program and simple exercises. He even meddles with my finances and email, but all to my benefit. I am in the process of downsizing and his logic helps me divide my stuff into Zone One and Zone Two. Thank you, Peter, for nailing it!

Loving it!

Still reading it. I'm starting week #2 tomorrow which is decluttering the bedroom. Peter Walsh has great information, gives lots of encouragement and brings in experts for the diet and exercise portion and the mindfulness meditation. I'm doing my own diet right now, but I love how his is set up. You have so many healthy choices its not a diet, but being mindful about healthy food choices. The exercise portion is great if you don't have any equipment. I go to the gym, but the book offers good options. The parts on being mindful are incredibly helpful when dealing with cravings or emotional attachment to stuff. It has really changed the way I look at things. Going through my kitchen in week #1 was difficult at times, but also very rewarding. I have filled 3 kitchen garbage bags for the trash and put 3 boxes of items for a garage sale, or to give away. It is a great relief to have a vision for the spaces in my house and work to accomplish it. My house is not messy and it doesn't look cluttered, but inside my cupboards...holy Hannah! I have found things I'd forgotten about and never use. It feels great to make decisions about those things and move them out.

So I'm off to week #2 for another cathartic experience!! I highly recommend this book!

About the Author

A fascinating & memorable read

Having visited Khiva several years ago the book brought back wonderful memories and much more. I found it fascinating to discover the many different aspects of life in Ouzbekistan. The endemic corruption is well known & visible (as in the roadworks, the restoration of the monuments...etc) but just how widespread & its impact on the society ( one example, teachers have to bribe the director to get their salary) is well described as is the people's kindness & friendliness. The author's efforts to help the forgotten (the divorced, the crippled women etc) with a paid activity making carpets with traditional designs using natural dies is marvellously described. His first visit to Afghanistan (which I have also visited) to look for natural dies is another vignette of life in the Middle East.

A very interesting account of the several years spent in Khiva by a British expatriate. Having spent several years in Kazakhstan as an American expat, I found many of the anecdotes relatable, and the corruption and greediness of the local governmental authorities to be identical with my own personal observations. This is an entertaining and well written account, so I would recommend it highly to anyone interested on getting a flavor for what life is like in Central Asia in general, or Uzbekistan in particular.

I do hope Alexander writes another book. This one was so enjoyable I did not want it to end.

I am planning a trip to Khiva and am sure I will appreciate it more after reading this. He provides valuable insights into the culture and he really loves the people he worked and lived with. You will, too.

He also has a wonderful sense of humor.

The ability to record eye-movements has helped advance our science and led to technological innovations. However, the
growth of eye tracking in recent years has also presented a variety of challenges - in particular the issue of how to design an eye-tracking experiment, and how to analyse the data.

This book is a much needed comprehensive handbook of eye tracking methodology. It describes how to evaluate and acquire an eye-tracker, how to plan and design an eye tracking study, and how to record and analyse eye-movement data. Besides technical details and theory, the heart of this book revolves around practicality - how raw data samples are converted into fixations and saccades using event detection algorithms, how the different representations of eye movement data are calculated using
AOIs, heat maps and scanpaths, and how all the measures of eye movements relate to these processes.

Part I presents the technology and skills needed to perform high-quality research with eye-trackers.
Part II covers the predominant methods applied to the data which eye-trackers record. These include the parsing of raw sample data into oculomotor events, and how to calculate other representations of eye movements such as heat maps and transition matrices.
Part III gives a comprehensive outline of the measures which can be calculated using the events and representations described
in Part II. This is a taxonomy of the measures available to eye-tracking researchers, sorted by type of movement of the eyes and type of analysis.

Kenneth Holmqvist is an associate professor in Cognitive Science at Lund university, where he founded the eye-tracking laboratory in 1995, which later grew into the large Humanities Laboratory. He has worked in a large variety of eye-tracking-based research stretching from reading research and scene perception, over to newspaper reading, advertisement studies and gesture recognition in face-to-face interaction. Kenneth also has expertise in eye tracking used in applied areas, including decision making in supermarkets and research on safety in car driving and air traffic control. In 2000, Kenneth initiated regular master courses in eye-tracking methodology. In 2006, he founded the Scandinavian Conference on Applied Eye-tracking, and in 2008, the international LETA training courses in eye-tracking methodology. Kenneth is the initiator and main author of this book.


Marcus Nystrom received his PhD in Information Theory from the department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University, Sweden, in 2008, working with foveated video compression and scene perception. He currently works in the Humanities Laboratory at Lund University. His research interests span eye-tracking methodology in general and analysis of eye-tracking data in particular.


Richard Andersson is a PhD student in cognitive science and technician at the Lund University Humanities Laboratory. He teaches eye-tracking methodology and provides users with help during the formulation, building and analysis stage of the eye-tracking experiments.


Richard Dewhurst is presently a post-doctoral researcher at Lund University Humanities Laboratory, funded by the Swedish Research Council. He completed his PhD on training eye movements at the University of Nottingham in 2009, as part of the Cognition and Language research group. Prior to this he also obtained an MSc in psychological research methods from the University of Nottingham, and a BSc in psychology from the University of Wales, Bangor. His research focuses on attentional mechanisms and eye movements. More specifically how eye movement control changes with learning and experience, and how to devise and implement procedures for improving visual skills through training eye movements.


Halszka Jarodzka works as an assistant professor at the Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies at the Open University of the Netherlands. She holds a Master degree in Psychology and a PhD from the Knowledge Media Research Center, both at the Eberhard-Karls University of Tuebingen, Germany. Halszka's research focuses on the use of eye-tracking and verbal protocols in educational psychology, in particular investigating characteristics of visual expertise with expertise difference studies as well as teaching of biological classi?cation or medical diagnosis based on visual observation and interpretation of dynamic scenes by means of eye movement modelling examples.


Joost van de Weijer defended his PhD thesis at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in 1998. Thereafter he worked as a postdoc researcher at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and at the Department of Linguistics and Phonetics in Lund. Currently, he is affiliated with the Centre for Languages and Literature and at the Humanities Laboratory, both at Lund University.

It not only concentrates on hardware setups, analysis methods and parameter description but also summarizes all fundamental aspects of eye tracking research. Great book but it needs to expand the section on methods

I had the bought from two days, I read about two chapters before a colleague from overseas bought it from me (actually, he took it and paid me via Paypal). Now, I have to order the book again. The chapter on methodology is very good, it is worth the book. It fall short on the rest of the chapters, in particular when it comes to metrics. I would suggest for another edition, to expand the methodology part as it just one chapter.

If you are new to eye-tracking, this book might be for you, if you are looking for a comprehensive description on methods, this book is NOT for you.

I highly recommend this book to anyone considering using eye tracking in their research. Not only does it address the theory behind eye-tracking measures, but the practical guide for selecting equipment, setting up the lab and experimental station are often overlooked aspects that leave novice researchers to rely on salesman advice (rather than understanding their true needs), or trying to conduct research in an inappropriate space that leaves their data rife with noise.

Excellent simple approach for the very busy person teaching

The BEST feature of the New Oxford Picture Dictionary is that the workbook and textbook pages are correlated. It is SO much easier to teach a class of non-English speaking clients and SO much easier for them to experience success. They LOVE the format and the information is pertinent, with necessary language skills taught first. The pictures are EXCELLENT, and the content superb. Because I teach for 8 hours a day before teaching an English as Second Lang. class, I have little time to prepare. This series offers a simple, direct approach that is easy to reference, and easy to work with independently for the novice English speaker. BEST picture dictionary/workbook on the market. Please publish one in Norwegian! I will buy it!!!!!

A "Must" For ESL Classes

I'm relatively new at teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to Spanish speaking adults. Over the past year I've learned that this book is the first one I reach for when having trouble communicating with my students. Better yet, it is the first book the students reach for when trying to understand or with communicate with me.
This book addresses conversational English giving the student a way to communicate in an English speaking country. The words and pictures are pertinent to everyday living and very descriptive.
I have researched other books, but have not found anything which comes close -- at any price! -- to this picture dictionary.
If you only purchase one book of this type, this is the one to buy. If you are going to buy mulitple books on this subject, this should be the first one!

Low Power Design Essentials is the first book at the graduate level to address the design of low power digital integrated circuits in an orderly and logical fashion. As such, this book will be of interest to students as well as professionals. In addition to taking an educational approach towards low-power design, the book also presents an integrated methodology to address power at all layers of the design hierarchy. Finally, the text also explains the main roadblocks as well as the physical limits in further energy scaling.
This book is based on the extensive amount of teaching the author has carried out both at universities and companies worldwide. All chapters have been drawn up specifically for self-study. Different levels of understanding are included within each chapter. All chapters begin with elementary material and almost all contain advanced material.
A unique format is used for this book. Rather than the traditional approach of a lengthy continuous text interspersed with some figures, it uses the reverse approach of dominant graphics with accompanying suppplemental text. It is understood that a single figure does a lot more to convey a message than a page of text.
It is hoped that this innovative format provides a better structure for learning the essential topics in low power design.
About the Author
Jan Rabaey received his Ph.D degree in Applied Sciences from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. From 1983-1985, he was connected to the UC Berkeley as a Visiting Research Engineer. From 1985-1987, he was a research manager at IMEC, Belgium, and in 1987, he joined the faculty of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department of the University of California, Berkeley, where he is now holds the Donald O. Pederson Distinguished Professorship. He is currently the scientific co-director of the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC), as well as the director of the FCRP-sponsored GigaScale Systems Research Center (GSRC). He is an IEEE Fellow.

This book provides excellent coverage of low power design concepts and techniques for VLSI technologies. The author presents the subject with novel and contemporary treatments. The format and references are very useful for instructors. The release of the book is timely in the field.

My philosophy about gluten-free baking is that it should be simple. Most gf bakers I know don't want to reach for six different flours every time they bake- and neither do I.�Wheat bakers use only two flours- all purpose for cakes, pies, muffins and cookies, and bread flour for bread. I do the same: I have an all-purpose brown rice flour mix (extra finely ground brown rice flour, potato starch and tapioca starch) for my all purpose flour and the bread flour mix�(millet, sorghum, potato starch, tapioca starch and corn starch)�in this book for my breads.��It is easy- and it increases your learning curve. If you use a different combination of flours each time you bake, how will you know what goes wrong- or right? Baking pros don't do this; that is how they become skilled in their craft.�
Moreover, wheat bakers enhance the taste and texture of their breads with other added flours (whole wheat, rye, etc.) and so do I. I recommend using whole grain teff and ground oatmeal (my favorites), Montina, amaranth, or quinoa. I give recommendations as to how to do this in the book.� --From the Author

Annalise Roberts co-writes for the website foodphilosopher.com. She gives talks and demos to a variety of celiac support groups in the New York metropolitan area, including the Westchester Celiac Sprue Support Group. She is a resource contact for the Celiac Sprue Association in Bergen County, New Jersey (CSA is the largest celiac organization in America and has more than 10,000 members.) She teaches gluten-free baking and cooking at The Kings Cooking Studio in Short Hills, New Jersey and at local community adult schools in New Jersey.�

Works in Most Bread Machines

I'm surprised by the bad reviews on this book because I've used it since Christmas of 2009, in several different bread machines (at my friends' houses) and the loaves always turn out perfect. I've also helped a friend program her Zojirushi and the loaf came out perfect there too. I'm suspicious of the people who say they don't work in other brands, because in other machines, if you just press the button for "medium" or follow the directions for "medium crust" it will be just like it should. (I use an old Welbilt Bread Oven, which only has 3 settings.)

I wonder if those people are not selecting medium, or if maybe they're leaving out an ingredient or measuring wrong? It doesn't make any sense. I've made the Basic White Bread, Buttermilk Bread, Irish Soda Yeast Bread, Oatmeal Sandwich Bread, Multi-grain bread, and Black Forest Onion-Rye Bread. Everything works out great. I just pre-slice and freeze and we always have bread and bread crumbs for any occasion! Also, there are many more recipes in the book, as variations on the basic recipes. People here are also complaining about that, but clearly they are not bakers. Anyone who bakes gluten bread a lot knows that there are only a few basic recipes for bread. All others are just variations.

Excellent Gluten Free bread book

Great book of recipes. While not a large book you can tell by the content the thought and effort that went into it. Working with gluten free anything is daunting as you basically have to relearn baking, etc. I love the flour blend recipe in this book, I like it much better than the rice flour blends in ATK books. I have made a few of the breads in this book and they come out perfect - I do use the suggested homemade memory 1 setting and I have an older ZO machine ( best bread machines IMO). I love the Italian bread recipe - add Rosemary and 1 Tbsp. Psyllium powder to get fiber in there (increase water by 1/4 cup when adding). I find at least in my machine with Dark crust setting, the top of the loaf still doesn't brown so I just brush with olive oil when machine is done baking and I throw the whole pan in the oven on broil for 1 minute and It browns beautifully. Pop it out and let cool completely before slicing. I slice the whole loaf as thin as possible with a Bow knife for bread, pile the slices on a cookie sheet and throw in freezer a few hours then put in a vacuum bag back in freezer. This keeps it freshest and prefreezing keeps slices from sticking together or smushing. I take out what I need and toast it up. I have doubled these recipes for a larger loaf WITHOUT doubling yeast and just using Homemade Memory 1 setting as outlined - nothing increased at all, and my loafs still come out great. I have also used half the book's flour blend with ATK's rice flour blend so I can use it up and the loafs again came out great. I do want to note that I thoroughly whisk all my dry ingredients together, including the yeast before adding to the pan. Measuring sifting and remeasuring your flour is best. Siffting flours seems to increase the body of the loaf while helping to get a more accurate measurement. I truly appreciate this little gem of a book, I don't see the need for another as I can safely say I know I can add a few things to change the recipes up if I want and I know the loaf will still hold it's own because these recipes are that well balanced. That is - making adjustments within reason and some common sense. Like a little extra water if you add Psyllium like I do for some fiber which also helps offset the carbs a bit as these flours aren't exactly low carb. Like say coconut flour. Adding raisins, seeds, spices, etc. are fine without increasing anything else - I've done the Italian with Rosemary, Caraway seed, etc. Just love it - wouldn't even know it was gluten free. I don't need to be gluten free but I wanted to remove as much wheat as I could from my diet anyway. What I really noticed about gluten free flours is they are not gummy like glue - like wheat based flours. These flours dissolve almost immediately with water instead of smearing into a gummy mess. So easy to clean up. Wheat based flours deposit that gummy mess in your intestines - like a glue coating. It's no wonder they can't extract all the nutrients from our foods with that gummy mess coating them.
My only disappointment was no pumpernickel bread recipe. But I found a great one that was not for the bread machine, until I worked with it and now have a great recipe for that to make with this books flour blend / bake setting. If anyone wants to try it just contact me.

Recipes only good for Zojirushi breadmaker tested best on this brand

I bought a new gluten free Hamilton beach bread Machine. Only it does have a gluten-free cycle but the recipes from this book did not measure up . I bought the new zojirushi bread machine. Model BB CEC20. I decided I wanted to make horizontal loaves that look like the real bread. Also read the reviews on the bread maker and decided to get it.
Well this BOOK used with this bread machine for gluten free bread is delicious . If you want gluten free bread it really does need two blades. This book and my new zojirush bread machine all I need to make wonderful bread. Comes out deliciously moist and so easy. I use the homemade cycle memory 1 and followed the directions on the inputting into the memory cycle from the book. I have gluten free bread done in 2 .25hrs.

This book really gives great results using their recipes but keep in mind they have used the recipes tested best for the Zojirushi breadmaker.
You might not want the book if you are using another bread machine. I can attest to that since my Hamilton beach model and the recipes from this book turned out horribly.

Her own stories, and anecdotes from other achievers, are the basis for this chatty instruction manual for the distaff up-and-coming, which begins with the predictable assertion that women are generally different from men. The following chapters exhort readers to burn their career plans, listen to their guts, learn by example, benefit from smart moves, recover from bad ones, hire and fire well and manipulate situations to their advantage. Eighty-one "Naked Truths" punctuate her upbeat tale of mostly serendipitous and intuition-driven maneuvers. These aphorisms range from the obvious ("Return phone calls and emails") to the dubious ("If you undo a bad decision quickly, it doesn't count"). Sidebars labeled "Stripped-Down Wisdom" address corporate basics like how to dress, how to fire and how to cope as a working mother. In "Baring It," successful women recount their biggest mistakes and the lessons learned. A Business Book of Uncommon Candor and Heart

This is not just one great book, it's actually a couple great books - a business advice title of uncommon candor, a jaunty personal memoir, and an eye-opening account of life as a powerful woman and mother in corporate America. In the interest of full disclosure, Robin was one of my mentors - and this book manages to distill her cool wit, cut-to-the-chase honesty, and keen judgement into one galloping read. If you're a woman in corporate America, read this book - and if you're a man in corporate America, really read this book - Robin's rare combination of fearless leadership, humility and open heart are a model for look-yourself-in-the-mirror career success.
