Excellent book on HIV in Africa

Really a must read for anyone working in HIV in sub-Saharan Africa or just seeking to understand the history of the epidemic in SSA or anywhere. Very accessible while being filled with information. It does not require a particularly sophisticate amount of knowledge about HIV or SSA, though some basic knowledge would help. It will be required reading in any course I teach on HIV.

The author narrates her perception of events leading to 1950's Jayuya revolution which is not taught in our history, although events are real. She backs everything with newspaper clippings of the events in Jayuya and the central government's reaction and its relations with US during the "taking of Jayuya". I could not stop reading once I started and presented the book to various friends, and all had the same reaction. Bravo!

Very interesting book! A look at the Puertorrican history and their sense of patriotism during the depression years. The economic and social struggles they faced and how they evolved. A mixture of feelings of loyalty, leadership, love of country, and anger. I came across this book by accident and I am glad I decided to downloaded to my kindle. A great read.

Breathtaking Beauty

This is an extraordinary collection of art - comprehensive and diverse, spanning a significant portion of human history. Brief descriptions and explanatory text are sprinkled about but the greatest pleasure, in my opinion, derives from the gorgeous reproductions of art related to alchemy and mysticism.
I actually own two copies of this book. One that I peruse regularly and another that I shall keep as a spare should my first wear out. It is an excellent gift - very uplifting and immensely inspiring.
The subject of alchemy has been somewhat cheapened in our time - reduced to a few basic - often misrepresented - ideas and thrown about by simple minds with incoherent ideas. Few people have encountered the breadth of the subject and the contributions it has made to human civilizations. The inspiration it has provided artists and scientists is immense and this book captures quite a bit of this significance.
The author neither advocates existing belief in alchemy and mysticism, nor denies it. It is a historical perspective - largely relayed through imagery - celebrating the great beauty of the subject and the complexities it once contained.

Short version of the original book

Why do I give this book only 2 stars? I don't agree with the way this book is marketed. Watch out for ordering this book, as there are two books of the same title, author and publisher. What's the difference? One of the books has the word 'icons' on it and has only 192 pages from the original book. The original book has 712 pages. Check that the ISBN's match for what you are after. I made the mistake of buying this book from a site that did not list the page numbers and went off the title, publisher, author and picture on the front cover. Since first writing this review, I have now returned to say that I have the original 712 paged book and am very happy with it. When it comes to a book like this, why settle for second best?

A Museum should have better reproductions.

High praise that somebody said she owned two copies, one as a spare. I agree that this is a nice book to have as a reference, and I'm sure it must be the largest collection of "Hermetick" and "Alchymical" images presently available under one cover. That said, it's pretty small (although to produce this in a large volume would probably put its price out of the range of the average enthusiast), the colors are often badly reproduced, and the text is only excusable because nobody expects much in the way of text from Taschen. The main thing you have here is convenience. I have a large enough collection of books that I can track down superior examples of most of these images...but I have to track them down. With this book, I just flip through the pages. As a companion to this book I would suggest either (preferably, if you can find it) "Alchemy: the Medieval Alchemists and Their Royal Art" by Johannes Fabricius, or (failing that) "The Golden Game: Alchemical Engravings of the Seventeenth Century" by Stanislas Klossowski de Rola, for a better look at the engravings specifically. Also, "Art and Symbols of the Occult" by James Wasserman has the best color reproductions I've seen of the lavishly-painted sixteenth-century alchemical manuscript "Splendor Solis," amidst many other amusing curiosities.

Seventeen years after the publication of his still-popular road story/philosophical meditation, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance , Pirsig offers another lengthy and absorbing investigation of how we can live well and rightly. Phaedrus, the one-named narrator "who had written a whole book on values," is sailing down the Hudson River when he meets Lila Blewitt, an unapologetically sexual, psychologically unstable woman whom a mutual friend warns him against. But Phaedrus is drawn to her physically and interested in her intellectually, finding her "a culture of one" in whom he discerns an unexpected "Quality." Sailing with him to Manhattan, where her mental state deteriorates further, Lila prompts Phaedrus to explore conflicts of values like those between Native Americans and Europeans or between the insane and the normal. Finally, after years of struggling, he formulates his "Metaphysics of Quality" which offers a system of understanding--and evaluating--actions according to a hierarchy of four evolutionary realms (natural, biological, social and intellectual). Though Lila's fate is left unresolved, Pirsig's wide-ranging philosophical explorations will provoke and engage readers.

Pirsig's newest work continues in the same philosophical vein as his earlier books, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance ( LJ 10/15/74) and Guide book to "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" ( LJ 10/15/90). Lila is a novel-cum-philosophical tome that wrestles with the issues and problems of life in the Nineties. Phaedrus, the principle character, is a writer grappling with his latest treatise, the "metaphysics of Quality." Lila, his aging and desperate wharf-bar pickup, provides the right amount of antagonism and criticism to hone his ruminations of life and civilization to something understandable and real. Pirsig has some fairly interesting ideas, but his evasiveness in defining his version of "quality" early on may lose some readers. His transition from the novel format to the philosophy lesson is uneven and distracting at times. However, his observations lead to some surprising revelations. Readers familiar with his earlier work will want this. Recommended.

Pirsig's absorbing second novel, appearing nearly two decades after Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, continues where his former work left off--in an exploration of the Metaphysics of Quality set against a journey by sailboat to the Atlantic Ocean. Phaedrus, peripatetic author of a successful book about motorcycles, is once again on the road in this philosophical odyssey--or rather on the Hudson River, as he makes his way toward the Atlantic and, eventually, Florida. His initial goal was to isolate himself sufficiently to complete his second novel, which currently consists of hundreds of notes that he regularly reorganizes and stores in rusty card-catalogue drawers. But isolation is the last thing a sailboat captain experiences on the water, Phaedrus discovers, and it's just as well, because his encounters with Lila (an aging former prostitute), Richard (her childhood friend), and assorted others along his journey inspire even more exciting concepts for his philosophical book. Chief among these is the concept of ``quality'' or value, which Phaedrus posits as the basic organizing principle of the universe. Shifting away from the Western world's reliance on subject-object and cause-and- effect relationships, Phaedrus suggests that everything is instead an expression of more or less quality, and that evolution moves not toward survival of the fittest but toward higher forms of value. While Phaedrus teases a ``scientifically-based'' morality out of this concept (lower forms of quality, such as individual humans, should be sacrificed if necessary in favor of higher forms, including society and, even higher, ideas), Lila begins exhibiting psychotic behavior and Richard becomes increasingly irritated with Phaedrus' abstract, self-absorbed pose. Readers may occasionally feel the same irritation--scenes that advance the plot seem carelessly scribbled in the author's hurry to get back to his theory--but as ever Pirsig's provocative ideas far outweigh such drawbacks. Lackluster Lila

"Lila" was a disappointment, following Pirsig's monumental success with "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" (ZAMM). We sadly
recall how his son was murdered in San Francisco, at the end of the motorcycle trip they took together in ZAMM, forever leaving unresolved the issues that came between a father and a son. Pirsig was so disillusioned with the pervasive violence in American society, he relocated abroad and lives on a boat with his wife in Europe. This is the background for "Lila" and explains why it is such a disappointment: it was written by a man still reeling with grief and suffused with anger at the senseless death of his son.

Gone is the introspection and soul searching of ZAMM, the attention to mechanical detail and the zen of solving problems using quality. "Lila", like ZAMM, also describes a journey but it is one of personal pain and grief, taking place on water rather than asphalt. But writing from a source of grief limits Pirsig's expression and insight as his energy is directed towards emotional healing, to over coming the numbness and detachment that follows the loss of a loved one, especially a child.

I look forward to his next literary effort when both time and physical distance has allowed him to recover and knit together his creative and emotional components, allowing him to regain the perspective that thrust Pirsig among the ranks of uniquely American literary "giants" like Steinbeck and Kerouac.

A pretty spectacular "failure"

Lila is the second of Robert Pirsig's books and was widely considered a disappointment when it came out. Part of the problem with this is that is lacks the character driven narrative of father and son the weaves throughout Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It also lacks a satisfactory ending to the story compared to Zen - and the characters, from Phaedrus and Lila all the way down are far less likeable. In many ways, Lila was a story - as a novel - that could never live up to the impact that ZAAMM has had on so many people. It's much colder and so much more analytical.

Having said that, Lila should be approached from a different perspective. It was never meant to be a ZAAMM kind of story and is not a novel that is going to provide a satisfactory summing up. But if you take the time to read and re-read it, and if you agree with Pirsig's philosophical theories...it becomes quite compelling. It provides a framework for better understanding the role that "Quality" - which is not definable via language - can play in a world dominated by scientific reason.

If you enjoyed Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance but were disappointed with Lila, I encourage you to give this enquiry another chance.

A jewel well hidden

Only a few times in a lifetime does one find a book that actually means something. In his two novelosophies, he has completely and forever altered the fundamental assertions of science, by showing how flawed the scientific method is. He has undercut 125 years of anthropology by clearly demonstrating that the refusal to allow value judgements even when coming from THAT culture's value system is nonsense. The fact that the metaphysics of value would have been our value system except for an accident of history in ancient Greece is very well detailed.

Don't read my junk, but do go read BOTH of Robert Pirsig's books.

About the Author

Lawrence N. Dworsky, PhD, is a former corporate research lab director at Motorola, Inc., where he was also a member of the Science Advisory Board. He has also served as a consultant to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Littelfuse Corp., and HRL Laboratories, LLC. A Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Dr. Dworsky has held academic positions at Columbia University, Northern Illinois University, and Florida Atlantic University.

Probability discussed with light mathematics

Written in what I call the "textbook lite" style, intermediate between college texts teaching one to do math probability calculations in systematic detail, and the "popular science" style with words but no math. The contents might be put into 4 categories.

(1) Initial chapters give clear and unhurried explanations (illustrated by graphs and tables) of the basic math surrounding probability distributions, averages and standard deviations, and how the Normal distribution arises in dice-throwing or random walk.

(2) Scattered throughout the book are the classics of elementary math probability: the Binomial and Poisson distributions; conditional probability; Bayes rule illustrated by medical diagnosis; the birthday problem; Monte Hall; Benford's law and Simpson's paradox; gamblers ruin; analysis of games such as double-up-when-you-lose, and the Deal-or-no-Deal TV show.

(3) "Popular science" topics such as social networks, stock markets, statistical mechanics, deterministic chaos.

The preceding material is presented in a clear and readable way, though not markedly distinct from many previous books of varying styles, for instance (in the same "textbook lite" style) Probabilities: The Little Numbers That Rule Our Lives or Chance: The Life of Games & the Game of Life. The only part that struck me as somewhat distinctive was a fourth category, starting with a discussion of random number generators, and proceding to descriptions of and analysis of simple stochastic models for several phenomena, such as: driving through a series of traffic signals, waiting in a doctor's office, observing some birds flying in a forest and trying to estimate the total number of birds.

Overall: well-written, worth reading if you haven't seen such material before, but no particular individual vision and so not a notable addition to existing literature. Like most existing books it is content to repeat theory without critical examination of real-world applicability or significance. The subtitle is misleading -- it's not specifically about future prediction. And at $64 for a 300-page paperback it is considerably more expensive than many alternative books I have reviewed, such as Chance: The Life of Games & the Game of Life or Chance Rules: An Informal Guide to Probability, Risk and Statistics.

Concise, hilarious, insightful and real!

Agile is a breath of fresh air in a sea of "How to do [lofty lifetime goal] with hardly any [insert verb or noun] guides you see everywhere, that are expensive and way longer than they need to be. Sasha has distilled the ideas that most authors would spread over 300 pages into a powerful little gem you can read in one sitting.

Ideal for the chronic procrastinator, Sasha encourages readers to reflect on their true motivations, and break even small goals into bite-sized individual actions or "sprints".

Even the length of the book is perfect for the short attention span... I read (and finished!) this book in just over half an hour, which is a great example of the "sprint" Sasha encourages to begin the journey to any big goal. I work in a high volume, stressful sales career where bigger and better results are always expected, yet I am often overwhelmed by even small changes to my busy routine and yearly goal setting. The set goal + sprint + get support + celebrate "getting there" formula keeps me on track.

Filled with genuine moments of humor, stories of personal challenge, and encouragement to do what we can for the right reasons, I highly, highly recommended Agile for anyone who spends more time dreaming than doing, who starts more than she finishes, and who truly desires big change--one moment at a time.

Creatively Finishing what you set out to accomplish!

If your nickname is "Im gonna" never really finishing anything or sticking with anything long enough to reach the kind of success you desire then this will speak to your soul. Personally I could never get a grasp on the whole Tony Robbins “massive action” thing. The truth was I wasn’t really clear on what "massive action" was nor about what I wanted or why I wanted what I wanted so I was kind of wishy washy on it all. Reading this book was a revelation. Connecting the dots. Understanding the process, the truth of it, and being able to see how my thought patterns affected my ability to act with focus and get through the challenge moments to find true success. A perfect checklist to achieving your personal legend.

Game-changer, I'm about to read it again!

If you're reading this review, the book has already found you. This Mo guy is not your typical self-help author (not that I have anything against them, I'm one of those hippie-nerdy types who has an entire bookshelf dedicated to books on happiness :). He's probably the last person you'd expect to write a book like this (a Silicon Valley high tech executive) but I think that's part of what sets it apart -- it's a very carefully compiled set of insights with one goal only -- your happiness.

I challenge you to read this book and *not* end up questioning some of your most deeply held beliefs -- in the most wonderful, enlightening, and life-freeing way. Just flip to any chapter and prepare to have your mind delightfully blown-- there's so many surprising topics you wouldn't expect to find within one cover. I can't wait until this book gets into the hands, minds and hearts of millions because it will truly spark a revolution within our collective consciousness, irreversibly raising our capacity to enjoy life as it's meant to be lived. I'm so grateful for Mo's dedication to sharing his many years of personal research and the equation that has passed the ultimate test of any human being's resilience... truly a gift that I have already begun to share with everyone I can.

To be honest, I initially thought the idea of an engineering approach to happiness was a completely ridiculous one, and mostly read the book out of pure curiosity. To my shock, I couldn't put it down for 3 days! The book has profoundly changed my perspective on several aspects of life, essentially making me a much happier person. Definitely works.
