Sending the Royal 29534F back

I am sending back a ROY29534F. I got it because it seemed updated and smaller to carry then my Seiko S II., and the Royal got excellent reviews. The Seiko is at least 10 years old with American Heritage Dictionary. . So, I test the spelling on the Royal. I misspell OSTENTATIOUS.

The Royal came up with one choice OSTENTA. I spell my chosen word correctly and it came up with one choice OSTENTA. And it took longer by several seconds on both inputs than the Seiko. The Seiko on misspelling OSTENTATIOUS; came up with 4 choices, and on the correct spelling showed “correct” all done in one second. It gets worse. With the Seiko I can from SPELL tap the DICT and get the definition to make sure this is the word I want, not just that it is spelled correctly. With the Royal when you hit “dictionary” I had to reenter the offered word. My conclusion; the Royal is harder to read, is slower, is inaccurate, and more cumbersome than my 10+ year old Seiko. Avoid the Royal like the Plague.

About the Author
GEORG FEUERSTEIN (1947-2012) was was a German-Canadian Indologist specializing in yoga. He authored over thirty books on mysticism, yoga, Tantra, and Hinduism. He translated, among other traditional texts, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad-Gita.

A masterful synthesis of east and west perspectives of the mind, well written, thoroughly informed, and in a sobrious approach.
Georg Feuerstein stands as one of the foremost scholars-practitioners of Yoga of the XX century, acknowledged not only in the west, but also in highly learned circles of native indian scholars. His scope and profoundity on eastern traditions from a western psychological and philosophical outlook can only be compared with Carl Gustav Jung research (The Psychology of Kundalini Yoga, Psychology of Religion, Psychology and the East) and Herbert Guenther (From Reductionism to Creativity, Matrix of Mystery, Philosophy and Psychology in th Abhidharma), adding that he was an experienced and mature practitioner of Yoga, not only a scholar. He really had reached the goal anticipated by Henri Bergson, that a true philosopher has to know reality no only with his mind, but also with his soul.

An Excellent Read!

Georg has written an excellent book, for understanding Psychology from the Yogic Perspective. There is so much material on Asana and the Physical Practice of Yoga. This work is a breath of fresh air, and returns us to the original Yoga, which was not about mastery of the body only, by mastery of the Self, the mind, the emotions. Without meditation, Yoga is merely exercise. Georg dives deep not only into the Mental Aspects of yoga, (with many references to scientific studies), but also the concept of Energy Anatomy- that we have "layers" of being- i.e. physical, energetic, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, etc.... and explains how true Yoga Practice is about integration.

An Essential Book in Understanding the Real Yoga Tradition

If you are interested in real yoga then you cannot go past Georg Feuerstein in exploring the depths of this ancient tradition. Georg dedicated his life to the study of yoga and all of his books are enlightening and go to a depth on the subject that is unmatched. This book is an advanced study of yoga and is probably better to read after you have read "The Yoga Tradition" by him. His work is at a high level, it is scholarly and intuitive. When I read Georg's books I get the feeling that he really embodied the esoteric axiom of the "intellectual intuition" that a master exhibits. When I teach and mention the tradition of yoga I always point people in the direction of his books. Hopefully those people interested in just the materialist yoga that is developing in the world will one day be brought back to the inner tradition of yoga and follow its philosophical tenets. This book is a gem and one that I cherish.

John P. McKay (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is professor emeritus at the University of Illinois. He has written or edited numerous works, including the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize-winning book Pioneers for Profit: Foreign Entrepreneurship and Russian Industrialization, 1885-1913. �Clare Haru Crowston (Ph.D., Cornell University) teaches at the University of Illinois, where she is currently associate professor of history. She is the author of Fabricating Women: The Seamstresses of Old Regime France, 1675-1791, which won the Berkshire and Hagley Prizes. She edited two special issues of the Journal of Women's History, has published numerous journal articles and reviews, and is a past president of the Society for French Historical Studies.
�Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison) taught first at Augustana College in Illinois, and since 1985 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she is currently UWM Distinguished Professor in the department of history. She is the coeditor of the Sixteenth Century Journal and the author or editor of more than twenty books, most recently The Marvelous Hairy Girls: The Gonzales Sisters and Their Worlds and Gender in History. She is the former Chief Reader for Advanced Placement World History.Joe Perry (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is Associate Professor of modern German and European history at Georgia State University. Excellent book chronicling the amazing development each of us enjoyed before our birth. The only negative is that at the end, the author says, "This is not to say I am opposed to abortion. A woman has a right over her own body." This is so double-minded! He just wrote an entire book about the unborn child as a separate PERSON who can hear, see, taste, smell, learn, and most importantly FEEL before birth! Shaking my head...

This "Rookie-Read-About Science" series is good because A

This "Rookie-Read-About Science" series is good because A.) It has vivid photographs, B.) It contains text that a first- or second-grader can read pretty well, but C.) The concepts it presents are interesting, but D) It is succinct and doesn't blather on too long, and E.) it explains several "science-y" words with photos in a glossary for the young reader. As a teacher, I include books from this series as part of a high-interest library that children can choose from so as to learn to enjoy reading recreationally. An older child who is struggling to read would also benefit from it--and its content would still be of interest. Furthermore, the spine isn't flimsy; just bend back the front cover where the crease is--that will help preserve the book.

Tiny book but great information on magnets for young children

I admit I was a tad disappointed when this book arrived. It is so small and thin I wondered how it could possibly help my first grader understand what magnets are about. Well, I did purchase several other books on the subject but this provided the basis for understanding what magnets are about, at a level a young child can easily comprehend.

The book covers basic information on magnets, and how magnets attract and repel, as well as the objects magnets repel and attract. I also purchased a simple magnet kit to go along with this and some iron filings. My husband and I found this to be an excellent primer on magnets for our daughter before embarking on her first science project, and yes, it is on magnets.

Excellent & Thorough study of the history of Radar especially in the 1930s & 1940s.

This is a very thorough discussion of radar's start up and design & use progress in the 1930's and 1940's by the US, Britain, Japan & Germany. This study has a good sprinkling of technical designs, manufacturers in all countries and the magnetron type numbers and who made them. Best book I've read in a long time.

Improvement is necessary for future editions

The book is an extremely valuable, comprehensive and trusted source of information about all principal aspects and many details of the radar before and in time of the WWII, except one minor aspect. This is the pre-war history of radar R&D in the USSR. The author cites only one reference - a book by a Soviet general M. Lobanov, who supervised the gun laying radar developments in the 1930s, written in 1975. Still it is clear that the author could not read Russian and so had the book translated by someone. It looks like not all the book was translated or read, because too many facts, names and organizations are twisted, mixed up and simply omitted. This old Sovet book gives much better vision and proper names and facts than those reproduced by L. Brown. Still today exist other sources on this topic. In some sad way, the mentioned deficiency continues long tradition in the English-centered literature of neglecting and not accurate using the information available about the radar in the USSR even if it is scarce. The tradition started when someone in America in 1944 made a capital error in the name of one of two Russians who measured a real cavity magnetron in 1937 and published it in 1940 (in Russian) - correct name Malyarov or Maliarov was twisted and printed as "Malairov". And so, forever in English/USA publications the poor guy is "Malairov". L. Brown, in similar way, twisted the history of the research radar Zenit and presented it in a most sardonic way as an example of the worst radar development existed at that moment. I am not going to discuss this in details. I'd like only to note that, first, in the mentioned boook of Gen. Lobanov the story of Zenit is given with great sympathy and his evaluation of that achievement is clearly highly positive, at least at the time of 1938-39 testing. Second, the subsequent failure of the project was not a result of bad engineering, as it is presented by L. Brown, but rather of the Orwellian circumstances of the Soviet life in the late 1930s. The story of Zenit can be read in A.A. Kostenko, et al., "Development of the first Soviet three-coordinate L-band pulsed radar in Kharkov before WWII", IEEE Antennas Propagat. Magazine, 2001, vol. 44, no. 3, pp. 28-49. I hope that this story and proper names of people and organizations, and also principal facts, will be presented in better way when, if ever, this book is published as a next edition.

Monument to a fascinating technology

Brown began his studies on World War II radar development "because the book he would have liked to read did not exist". The outcome is a book almost any reader would love to have written! Although radar became an esoteric subject almost from the beginning, the necessary technical background is presented clearly and the reader does not have to be an electronics specialist to enjoy the superb panoramic view Brown presents of the development of a technology that changed the face of war - and that of peace as well! Even if one is familiar with the subject, surprises start popping up in the first dozen pages or so. This is not an updated version of the books that have gone before but something new. In the first place, it is based on massive, critical and thoroughly documented research. Secondly, it does not focus on the efforts of just one or two participants in the radar epos - be it the Germans, British, American, the naval or air forces. Instead it describes the almost simultaneous and often comparable developments that took place before and during the war worldwide. Critical, and thus well-known, subjects like the role of radar in the Battle of Britain are dealt with, of course, but even here fresh insights are offered. And besides, many epic events that have unjustly been "forgotten" - such as the Japanese forces that were NOT to be found on Attu Island - are described. Even the selection of the photographs (of excellent quality) bears testimony to a fresh approach. Almost invariably, mention of the German Seetakt radar has been accompanied by pictures of the burning wreck of the Admiral Graf Spee. Here we see an intelligence officer's nightmare (or delight!): a German Torpedo School ship with Seetakt antenna in full view - in a freely available 1939 pocketbook! What makes the story so coherent is that radar is firmly placed in the context of the military operations: it shows how the brighter warriors exploited the new technology and how the dumber authorities goofed. And finally, there is a wealth of anecdotes, from the horrific to the hilarious. I find Brown's Radar History just as good as R.V. Jones' "Most Secret War": serious but light-footed, and very well written.
