Cartouche Cards - an effective oracle

I bought my first set of these excellent cards about fifteen years ago, drawn by the Egyptian imagery. I "played" with them for a few years before starting to use them in my professional readings, and since then my understanding of the cards has deepened considerably. As with any predictive tool, it is necessary to establish a resonance with the cards, and I've found that this has developed more readily for me with Cartouche cards than with the Tarot's Major Arcana and the Runes, both of which I have used in the past. Over the years, Cartouche cards have slotted themselves on to an inner framework in my own depths, and the meanings that the cards reveal to me now vary slightly from those in the book "The Way of Cartouche". Clients are continually astonished at the accuracy of the cards and the helpful advice that can be drawn from them, and many are delighted by their attractive appearance, too.
Having worn out two decks of Cartouche cards, I am now in the market for a third!

These cards are Sirius!

I've been stepping up my efforts with the psychic work that I do, as an astrologer and tarot reader. Lately, I haven't been feeling the traditional Tarot (Rider-Waite) deck. So I've been nostalgic about my very first deck, the Way of the Cartouche! Man, I loved those cards. I only got rid of them because (1) they told me to do so (2) because I wasn't open to them after awhile. In my early 20s, I strayed away from metaphysics to empiricism/pragmatism. So, at my spiritual nadir and at the height of my abilities with the cards, I didn't have much use for them or they for me.

Now, nearly 15 years later, as I look back on my notes and journals from doing readings with this deck, I believe I gave some of the most phenomenal readings of my life. I highly recommend this deck as the imagery and ideas conveyed in this deck manifest on a very deep level. They somehow generate very meaningful and accurate answers, answers that speak faster and clearer than the 72 cards of the canonical Tarot, for me.

So now I'm on the market for a set of cards (and the book)! This definitely a good buy.

Phenomenal

My first set was the larger ones (still have 'em), that actually_warned_ me of the consequences of following the spiritual path of the giver! The cards are very hard to corrupt, unlike reports I've heard about used Tarot cards (I read Tarot, too).

The readings have been very accurate for me. They even answer a question other than the one you ask, but need to know. The cards really do invert when they need to.
When I cast the soul reading, I wondered if it would show that I was a Star Person: The first card up was Sirius!
I highly recommend this oracle.

An Incredible Resource for the Study of NT Greek

The “New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology” (ed. Colin Brown) has long been an important resource for Greek NT students. It served alongside the “Theological Dictionary of the New Testament” (ed. Kittel) as a resource for the study of Greek NT words, particularly highlighting their cultural, historical, and theological significance. Both of these dictionaries were not designed to replace standard Greek NT lexicons; but rather served a different purpose.

The original edition of this set (though very useful) was always hampered by certain drawbacks. Chief among those drawbacks was the organization of the set according to English words rather than the Greek words. The intent of this arrangement was to relate various NT words semantically related to one another thus providing the reader with the range of words designed to communicate particular concepts. This drawback was remedied by the release of the abridged edition by Zondervan, but that edition was not as comprehensive as the original edition.

Now, Zondervan has released a second edition of the full set edited by Moises Silva with many valuable changes. Here are some of the most important changes:

(1) The full set is now arranged according to Greek words rather than English words. This edition also includes a list of concepts to provide the list of various words related that concept. Now the problem with the first edition has been corrected while retaining the ability to find words related to a particular concept.

(2) Many additional entries have been added to the series increasing the range of words included in this set (now about 800 entries, covering 3000 Greek words). This means that the student will generally be able to find a discussion (some of the articles are very large spanning many pages) about most of the important words in the Greek New Testament.

(3) The bibliographies have been updated to reflect more recent scholarship. The discussions in the text have also been updated with these new resources contained in the bibliography.

(4) The cover artwork and the interior layout have been massively improved. This layout is very pleasing to the eye and it is very easy to find the information you are looking for. Each of the entries includes information on ancient Greek literature, Jewish literature (LXX, Pseudapigrapha), and of course the NT itself.

(5) A very helpful introduction by Moises Silva informs the reader on how the dictionary should be used (and how it should not be used) and includes an easy-to-read guide on the arrangement of the data in the dictionary.

(6). A fifth volume has been added to the set with all of the indexes. These indexes include an OT and NT scripture index, a Greek literature index, and a word index (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek). These indexes increase the usefulness of the other four volumes in quickly finding the relevant information.

For a theological lexicon, this is by far the best set now available on the market. The “Theological Dictionary of the New Testament” (ed. Kittel) is outdated at this point (though still useful) and the older edition of this set has now been superseded by this new edition. There is an abundance of riches in these pages for the student of the Greek NT.

Along with the standard lexical resources (BDAG, BAGD, LSJ, etc.), this set should be consulted regularly by the student and pastor for the faithful exegesis and exposition of the inspired words of the New Testament.

The word entries contain useful statistical data on its usage

The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis (NIDNTTE) is a thorough revision of the original New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology (NIDNTT; ed. Colin Brown; Zondervan 1975-78), which itself was based on the German two-volume dictionary, Theologisches Begriffslexikon zum Neuen Testamentum (1970-71).

The NIDNTTE consists of five volumes (four dictionary volumes and an index volume) that contain about 800 entries, covering 3000 Greek words. As to be expected, nouns and adjectives are listed in the nominative case and verbs are in the first-person singular. The word entries contain useful statistical data on its usage, as well as exegetical and semantic information. There is a consistent format for each word entry. It begins with a discussion of the word in Greek literature (pre-classical to Roman times), followed by the same for Jewish literature (LXX, Pseudepigrapha, Philo, Josephus), and, finally, with the usage in the New Testament (with occasional references to non-canonical early Christian literature). Where possible, relevant Hebrew and Aramaic words are discussed including their usage in the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and rabbinical texts. Each entry then closes with a bibliography listing other sources that can be consulted for further study (which, of course, have been updated from the original edition).

The first four volumes are the dictionary proper, with the fifth volume containing a handy set of indices, including scripture indices for the Old and New Testaments, indices for Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek words, and an index for Greek literature. There is also a conversion chart for converting from Strong’s numbers to Goodrick-Kohlenberger.

As I mentioned earlier, this volume edited by Silva is an updated version of Brown’s original edition. The original edition had the drawback of being organized according to English words, whereas Silva’s new edition organizes the entries alphabetically by Greek words. A useful feature that organizing by English provides is that it groups together New Testament words that are semantically related to one another. This feature is retained in this new edition, however, by providing a list of various words related to particular concepts (the list is found at the beginning of each volume). An example is the concept of “love,” for which there are six Greek words that fall under this concept. This feature is quite useful and if you study each word listed under a concept, then you gain a greater appreciation for how the different words all contribute towards a particular concept.

There are various differences one will notice between the editions by Brown and Silva. One example is that due to the original edition being published in the 70s, some of the articles focus on issues dealing with Bultmann’s theological interpretations (this was a time when Bultmanns’s work was still being interacted with in NT studies). The examples I compared have the discussions on Bultmann noticeably shortened in Silva’s new edition.

There are other theological and exegetical dictionaries of the New Testament. A classic is Kittel’s Theological Dictionary of the New Testament which, while still very useful, is a bit outdated at this point. Apart from being an up-to-date set, the NIDNTTE also has another useful feature that places it above Kittel’s TDNT, which is that each entry discusses the Greek word along with other words that are in its semantic field. That is quite a handy feature in my opinion. In fact, I think the whole method of organizing in Silva’s NIDNTTE is a step up from Kittel’s TDNT as it circumvents any confusion that may arise between lexicography and conceptual analysis.

The NIDNTTE will be a very useful tool for pastors and students of theology/biblical studies. This set is well-suited to help one understand the meaning of a Greek word in relation to its semantic field and to broader concepts. I imagine the NIDNTTE will become the standard New Testament theological dictionary.

Excellent Resource

As I prepare to teach a weekly class that has been working our way through Romans 8 for the past few months I am constantly reminded of Paul's words in his second epistle to Timothy. There Paul states "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth." The charge to handle God's Word correctly is one that Paul gives to Timothy and one that every Pastor/Teacher should feel the weight of. When we teach God's Word and say "this is what God is saying here" we had better have put in the proper amount of study and prayer to be sure we are accurately expounding on the text.

One indispensable part of the study process should be aquatinting oneself with words and their meanings. To do this a quality dictionary is a must. A few months ago I received the New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis (NIDNTTE) and began to use it on a weekly basis as part of my study process. Over the course of this time I have spent hours using this dictionary and now find it to be a go to source for me in my preparation process. Below I will highlight some of the major features (as well as provide a picture that highlights these features) and briefly describe some of the practical benefits of this set.

• Alphabetical arrangement according to Greek words instead of previous order according to English topics; this ensures that individual Greek words are not discussed in isolation from one another and are easy to access.

I do not own the New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology (NIDNTT) but this seems like a major correction/update to me. This arrangement allows for the grouping together of similar words which is quite beneficial in word study. I can see where this update would save a lot of time searching in relation to its predecessor.

• Expanded to include additional Greek words and concepts not covered in the original work, NIDNTTE includes nearly 800 entries covering over 3,000 Greek words

Nearly every important New Testament word is covered and these 800 entries cover over 3,000 pages (not including the Index Volume).

• Discussions have been revised to be in line with modern scholarship and bibliographies are updated.

The 40 year gap between the NIDNTT and the NIDNTTE means that much has been written, discussed and updated since the release of the NIDNTT and the NIDNTTE is revised to include modern scholarship.

• Corrections have been made to inconsistencies and omissions in earlier versions

With a dictionary of this size (3500 pages) there are bound to be errors that slip through. Over time these errors are brought to the attention of the publisher and Silva has updated this edition to correct these errors.

• Updated and added consistency to include—for every entry—all necessary background information from classical Greek, the LXX, and Jewish literature.

This feature of the dictionary has become such a useful tool for me over the past few months. Each entry is divided into three groupings (if applicable): Classic Greek (GL), Jewish (JL) and New Testament (NT). Here the reader can see the variance of usage, if any, across these categories of literature. Often times this can prove vital in gaining a proper understanding of how a word is used. This is something that many simple Greek Dictionaries will fail to do. An example can be seen with the word foreknow (like Paul uses in Romans 8:29). When studying this entry the reader will find that in classic Greek literature the word carries the meaning of "to perceive beforehand" or to foresee. From this usage it is easy to see where the idea that God foresees faith and thus chooses us would come from. On further examination though the New Testament entry reveals quite a different meaning for this word. Here Silva notes that "“Paul’s use of the verb demonstrates the character of God’s activity among human beings. It assumes the aspect of a personal relationship that originates in God himself....In Romans 8:29 the concept of foreknowledge does not refer to having a cognitive perception ahead of time (e.g., the idea that God knows ahead of time who is going to believe and that such knowledge is the bases for choosing). Rather, it speaks of the establishment of a relationship between God and the elect prior even to the creation of the world.” Understanding the New Testament usage provides the reader with a proper understanding of what Paul is trying to communicate. If the reader only had access to what the word meant in Greek it could lead to misinterpreting the passage. This is just one example, but I have come across this many times in the course of my review of this set.

• A helpful semantic domain index now directs the reader to all of the Greek words that have something to do with a particular English word. For example, under the English word “Anger, Wrath,” there is a list of thirteen Greek words that are related to that topic.

The index as a whole proves to be quite helpful. One can search by Old Testament or New Testament Scripture reference, Greek Literature Index, Jewish Index, Hebrew and Aramaic Word Index, Greek Word Index and a helpful Strong's to Goodrick-Kohlenberger conversion chart. The usefulness of this index makes it possible for anyone, whether they have extensive knowledge of languages or not, to be able to successfully search and find word entries in a timely manner.

Overall, I find this set to be an outstanding investment for any Pastor/Teacher or serious Bible student. This is a reference work that will surely continue to bless anyone who uses it for years to come. It is also available in digital form as well for those who may travel and cannot carry a five volume dictionary everywhere they go. A 28 page sample from Zondervan can be found here. The book’s interdisciplinary approach, drawing on Literary, Cultural, Fan, and Whiteness Studies, offers a cultural history of the anxieties which haunt Western popular culture in a century eager to declare itself post-race. The beginnings of the Fantasy genre’s habits of whiteness in the twentieth century are examined, with an exploration of the continuing impact of older problematic works through franchising, adaptation, and imitation. Young also discusses the major twenty-first century sub-genres which both re-use and subvert Fantasy conventions. The final chapter explores debates and anti-racist praxis in authorial and fan communities. With its multi-pronged approach and innovative methodology, this book is an important and original contribution to studies of race, Fantasy, and twenty-first century popular culture.

About the Author
Dr. Persing is the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Technology Officer at Cepheid and Consulting Professor of Pathology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Over the past 25 years, he has held leadership roles in academia and industry, starting with the design, implementation, and operation of the first PCR laboratory at the Mayo Clinic in the early 1990s. His interest in the democratization of molecular diagnostic methods has been longstanding, starting in 1993 with publication the first widely adopted textbook to include PCR protocols and guidelines for laboratory operations. His more recent work has focused on the enablement of molecular diagnostic technology to meet global needs. He has published over 300 peer reviewed articles and reviews, many of which are considered seminal works in the field. He has served as Editor in Chief for 5 textbooks published by ASM Press.

Fred C. Tenover is Vice President of Scientific Affairs, Cepheid; Consulting Professor, Pathology, Stanford University School of Medicine; and Adjunct Professor, Epidemiology, Emory University. Prior to joining Cepheid in 2008, Dr. Tenover served as Associate Director, Laboratory Science, Healthcare Quality Promotion Division and Director, Office of Antimicrobial Resistance, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and a Fellow of both the American Academy of Microbiology and the Infectious Disease Society of America. He has authored over 350 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and has edited 10 books.

About the Author
Donald M. DePamphilis has a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and has managed more than 30 acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, minority investments, as well as licensing and supply agreements. He is currently Clinical Professor of Finance at the College of Business Administration at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He has also taught mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructuring at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Irvine, and Chapman University to undergraduates, MBA, and Executive MBA students. He has published a number of articles on economic forecasting, business planning, and marketing. As Vice President of Electronic Commerce at Experian, Dr. DePamphilis managed the development of an award winning Web Site. He was also Vice President of Business Development at TRW Information Systems and Services, Director of Planning at TRW, and Chief Economist at National Steel Corporation.

5 stars for book's content; knocked off one star due to flaws in electronic version

This book's content is excellent, in my opinion. I will leave content reviews to others.

My review is intended to warn potential buyers of a couple of flaws in the electronic versions (Kindle for Mac and Kindle for iPhone). They are not fatal flaws, but they do detract a little from the reading experience.

Problem #1. Being a finance textbook, it includes finance equations. On both the Mac and the iPhone, you must use the View Options tool to set the background to Black in order to read the formulas. If you set the background to Sepia or White, those equations render so poorly on screen, that they become unreadable. They look like a low-resolution scan of a scan of scan. Broken, incomplete, moth-eaten. Timeworn, like something out of an ancient manuscript.

In the Mac version, they are not separate images, so they can't be enlarged. In the iPhone version, enlargement is possible and actually exposes the underlying cause of the problem: the Kindle software superimposes a layer of lighter-color text on top of the equations' native black type, thereby making the final result so hard to interpret. I find myself needing to constantly toggle background colors between Sepia (easier on the eyes for general reading) and Black (to read formulas).

To the editor: please either remove the added text layer, or convert the equations to type, in the same font as the remainder of the textbook.

Problem #2. In the iPhone version, touching the footnote hyperlinks only seems to work in one direction: forward. In other words, touching a numbered footnote embedded in the text works as expected (it take the reader to the linked footnote at the end of the chapter), but when the reader attempts to reverse direction and go back to the original reading point, it doesn't work -- the Kindle software merely moves a single page backward.

Perhaps this problem is due to the fact that footnote text is left-aligned, instead of being indented. Since the footnote hyperlinks are so close to the left edge of the phone screen, it seems logical the the software would be unable to tell that the reader's finger is trying to touch a hyperlink, not trying to go back one page.

To the editor: please try indenting footnote text to see whether this fixes the problem.

Professor Birolini and Springer-Verlag recently have published the fourth edition of the excellent text entitled Reliability Engineering: Theory and Practice. The structure of the book remains basically unchanged from the previous editions:

Chapter 1 addresses the basic concepts associated with quality and reliability assurance of complex equipment and systems.

Chapters 2-8 focus on reliability, maintainability, and availability analysis and test, with Chapters 3,5, and 8 focusing on practical aspects. Chapter 2 covers reliability analysis during the design and development phase and covers system structures and redundancies. It also covers reliability allocation (a favorite subject of the reviewer), mechanical reliability, failure mode analysis, and design reviews. Chapter 3 discusses qualification tests for components and assemblies. Included topics that are extremely useful but a bit off the chapter theme are basic component selection criteria such as environment, performance, technology, manufacturing, and reliability. Chapter 4, Maintainability Analysis, has added models and considerations for spare parts provisioning. The chapter also addresses maintenance concepts, design reviews, and predicting maintainability. Chapter 5 addresses many of the non-statistical design considerations such as derating, cooling, electromagnetic compatibility, and testability. Significantly, this chapter now includes design guidelines for software quality that address defect prevention, configuration management, software testing, and software quality growth models. Chapter 6 addresses redundancies and now addresses complex repairable systems in a variety of ways, including imperfect switching, incomplete coverage, and Monte Carlo simulation for rare events. Chapter 7 discusses statistical quality control, reliability tests, maintainability tests, accelerated testing, and goodness-of-fit tests. Chapter 8 covers quality and reliability assurance during the production phase. It includes screening and growth testing, although neither screening nor growth testing (especially the latter) should be restricted to the production phase.

Appendices A1-A5 address definition, standards, and program plans for the reliability assurance and management of complex systems. This is an important addition because it helps readers specify and achieve high reliability targets. Appendix A4 is particularly useful because it includes checklists for design reviews. Appendix A5 describes requirements for quality data reporting systems.

Appendices A6-A8 address basic probability theory, stochastic processes, and statistics. Appendix A7 focuses on basic stochastic process theory and includes Markov, semi-Markov, and semi-regenerative processes. This appendix now includes new models that address non-homogeneous Poisson processes (NHPPs).

Appendix A9 includes statistical tables, Laplace transforms and probability paper samples.

All in all, Professor Birolini has given readers an excellent instructional tool and desktop reference. It is extremely well written. The span of topics makes the coverage of some topics necessarily brief. Professor Birolini presents much of the non-statistical information in a manner that could be understood easily by engineering and program managers as well as reliability experts. He discusses the statistical topics in the proper amount of detail to ensure at least a good basic understanding. Tables, illustrations, and examples amply support the text. However, one disadvantage for classroom use could be that there are no sets of problems to be worked for homework assignments.

Very comprehensive but too academic

I'm happy with amount of information covered and the index is excellent!

As a professional practitioner I would prefer to see more emphasis on practical applications and less on theory and proofs.

I get more use out of the Weibull handbook, which is the opposite. It is very focused on the practitioner but the index is not as useful and it has minimal theory.

The pair of them are excellent. If I could only have 1 then as a student I'd buy this book but as a practitioner I'd by the Weibull Handbook.

What does it mean that McDonald's has become an integral part of daily life throughout East Asia--so much so, in fact, that many Asians have ceased to consider the American hamburger chain "foreign" at all? The five scholars who contribute essays to Golden Arches East have taken a novel approach to cultural anthropology. Call it hamburger historiography, perhaps, but their analysis of McDonald's ascendancy in the East has much to say about both the corporation itself and the changing values of Asian societies. Despite widespread criticism of McDonald's as a symbol of global homogeneity and environmental degradation, not all of these changes have been negative. In Hong Kong and China, for instance, McDonald's has actually contributed to improving standards of bathroom cleanliness and table manners, according to the authors. And the transformation has cut both ways; McDonalds itself has been forced to adapt to local culture and tastes. In studying how McDonald's has been assimilated into Asian societies, Watson et al. provide a fascinating portrait of cultural accommodation, compromise, and change.

Along with Coca Cola and Microsoft, McDonald's is ranked among the top five multinationals with the greatest presence in Asia. The fast-food giant has often faced hostility abroad as its critics charge it with everything from cultural insensitivity to economic and environmental imperialism. At the same time, McDonald's has proved wildly successful with foreign consumers, especially younger ones. Editor Watson and his five contributors acknowledge the concerns but do not address them head on. All six are anthropology professors at various universities, and their interest is in McDonald's as a cultural phenomenon. Looking separately at Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Beijing, each author considers demographic and ethnographic distinctions in how local consumers react and take to McDonald's products, service philosophy, and marketing tactics. They also investigate how the company has adapted its own way of doing things to local tastes, customs, and attitudes. You don't have to like or be interested in McDonalds, East Asia, or consumer practices in the economy to enjoy this book. It's insightful and an easy read, so it's worth picking up and flipping through. The book is broken up by country/region too, so you could just read about the places that interest you most.
