Wonderful format - average craftsmanship/build quality

This may be the very first time I have taken the time to write a review. I literally did weeks of research and narrowed it down to this bible and basically the Cambridge Clarion. I realize the price difference on the two are pretty extreme, so because of this I went with the ESV Readers Bible. For a $70+ bible I had some expectations. I did get the genuine leather addition. For starters the format is as expected - single column with close line matching to avoid ghosting on the page. I enjoy the verse numbers being at the top of each page and the red marks for chapter breaks. Size is comfortable in the hand. Leather is good quality and flexible - not goatskin flexible obviously. Overall I rate this a 4 out of 5 stars as there are a few drawbacks and craftmanship concerns. First off, the ESV logo on the binder is off center on the binding - enough for me to notice it. Yes this is not a huge deal but this is also not a $35 bible either. Also, there is only the leather sorrounding the bible. There is no page/fabric glued or sewn on either sides of the leather as you open the bible. Literally just a flap of leather surrounding the smyth sewn pages. Owning several bibles, I was surprised to see that about the leather as I feel it is not as structurally sound without the inner liner. The leather is also slightly off center and not equally centered and paralleled to the pages when you open it up - basically the leather overhanging past the pages is not equal on all sides. This is disappointing, but it's not that "off" to drive me that crazy. I also, am not one to complain and cause issues or go through the stress of trying to return the bible.

Just wanted to share my thoughts, so others could make an informed decision about purchasing this bible. It's great to read, but think they could tighten up the quality for the price.

Great Readers Edition, wonderful soft Top Grain Leather with quality binding!

This review is for the Top Grain Leather edition, I own the hardback version as well and both are great for the price! I'm very impressed with the quality of the leather and binding for this price range. The leather is very soft and flexible.

It's not easy to find a quality leather Bible these days for less than $120, the binding on this Bible reminds me of the Abba leather covers used by the old Nelson Signature Series Bibles.

The line matching is spot on in both this edition and the hardback edition, this really helps keep show through to a minimum.

While the quality of this Bible won't stack up to an Allen's Bible or a Schuyler Bible, for the price I don't think you'll find a nicer binding. I was impressed they went with such a limp edge-lined binding, you usually don't see edge-lined bindings at this price point.

I purchased 5 of these and I will mention that some of the Bibles don't have as deep of a grain pattern as the one shown. Keep in mind since this is natural leather the pattern and grain will be different on each Bible.

If you're not familiar with the "Readers Edition", please keep in mind this is a "no frills" Bible; there are no verse numbers, subject headings, book introductions, cross references, translators notes, concordance etc. There are four maps in the back, but that's it. This Bible is meant to help you immerse yourself in the actual story of the Bible.

While I wouldn't want this Bible as my "only" Bible, it's fantastic for reading, which is what it was designed for! You'll find it's easy to get lost in the story and read much longer than you might usually read a "normal” Bible.

A Christmas gift for my dad, and I want one for myself now! The photographs are stunning on their own, but the book's layout literally covers all of New York City, and the author's background makes for really informative text about the buildings we see in the photographs.

Great First Book

Mysteries are not usually my thing as I have trouble following all the minutia and too many characters. This book does not have either of these. Of course, it was also interesting because I have been to the Sacramento Capital and general downtown area many times as well as the trip to San Jose and could easily picture her descriptions. The story was interesting, the "who-done-it" kept me guessing, and the people seemed real. I will look forward to her second effort!

Better than expected!

A really good book. I will have to read it again to get the most out of it, as I read at night, and due to some heavy-duty meds, I fall asleep right in the middle of a chapter and don't remember half of what I read! There are so many characters I think I will make a chart to keep them straight until my mind catches up. I learned a lot about being a lobbyist. Like I would not want to be one! congrats to Bufo's sister. A talented family!

Each double-page spread introduces a new subject, such as land management, the manorial court, women’s work, and the possibility of a peasant gaining freedom. While the layout includes many elements on each spread (introductory paragraphs in bold, multiple columns of text, sidebars on different backgrounds, and several illustrations), the text and pictures work well together to reinforce the information presented. This is a comprehensive "cradle-to-grave" story of the life of the lowly peasant in medieval times

Naturally we'd all like to think we were descended from royalty, but the fact of the matter is if we are of European descent we're probably from peasant stock. The medieval period in Europe was approximately from the years 1000 to 1500. The top dogs in the feudal society, of course, were the kings, barons, knights and then there were the lowly peasants (who did all the work). The peasant was very poor and sometimes circumstance dictated whether he will be eating or dying in any one given season.

This book tells all about peasant life from the peasant's first breath to his last. If you are ten years old and lived in medieval times, you would have been one of the lucky ones because only 60 percent of children even made it that far. You would have shared your bed with your brothers and sisters in a cold, damp house in a dinky home in a small village. You might play "Buck hide" or played with a pig's bladder (you can read the book to find out more about this one). All the while you would be watching and preparing to take over your father's work. Do you think your ancestors were "plowmen, shepherds, fishermen, merchants, shoemakers, or bakers?"

This book makes learning history interesting, easy and fun. The book is well illustrated with archival art, a few photographs,and includes numerous medieval factual sidebars, a glossary, time line and medieval history web sites. Throughout, the writing style is clear, readable and informal. Examples are abundant and have complete worked solutions. Practice problems appear in the body of the text in each section; these are relatively easy and are intended to be worked by the student as soon as they are encountered. Each new type of example in the text is followed by a practice problem that allows the student to gain immediate reinforcement in applying the problem-solving technique illustrated by the example. Answers to all practice problems are given at the back of the book, many with worked-out solutions.
Other learning aids include the division of complex problem-solving processes into a series of step-by-step tasks, numerous exercises at the end of each section and a Status Check at the end of each chapter that helps students review what they have learned. Additional review exercises and a glossary, with definitions and page references, round out the book.

one of the best calculus books ever

A wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and beginning differential equations on their own or to go back and fill in holes.

This book leaves you wishing you had seen it earlier in life. I found myself smacking my forehead at how simply and powerfully it implants information into the readers mind. So clearly written and fun to read that since the early 1990s when it came out I have gone through many copies by giving it away to students and friends who wanted to learn or become better at calculus and mathematics in their spare time (and with little time to spare). I got online to buy another copy and was surprised it had not yet been reviewed!

Every chapter starts with a succinct lesson and then jumps into many worked examples that build upon each other until the reader is dizzyingly skilled. Little cartoon owls give special insight and mnemonic phrases in key places. Each chapter ends with exercises and solutions to odd numbered problems.

This book is ideal for people who have even moderate skill at Algebra I/II. College level physicists, engineers, and other applied scientists will really enjoy this book.

Excellent, Friendly Text

I agree with the previous reviewer that it is surpising that no one else has reviewed this book. It's terrific.

I had two semesters of calculus about 15 years ago. I did very well, but I wanted to brush up. This book has been ideal. It covers the basics of analytic geometry, differential and integral calculus, and ends with a chapter on differential equations.

I believe it would also be ideal for someone trying to teach himself. It is very friendly, and there are _lots_ of problems: examples, practice problems, and exercises. Answers are given to all practice problems and odd-numbered exercises.

I sort of doubt I'm getting the depth or breadth of my two college semesters, but I think this is a solid and user-friendly place to start.

Finest Explaination of Calculus and Analytic Geometry!

I agree with the other reviews about this book. I've been out of school for many years yet I used this book to prepare for the math content found on the engineer-in-training exam and I passed. I wish when I took calculus the first time in school that the teacher used this book. Gersting not only explains the subject matter well but also provides clear examples. Add to this it is excellent as a self-study book. I recommend it for anyone wanting to review the subject and also as a reference for those struggling in a traditional calculus classes.
